"All children, except one, grow up." Thus begins a great classic of children's literature that we all remember as magical. What we tend to forget, because the tale of Peter Pan and Neverland has been so relentlessly boiled down, hashed up, and coated in saccharine, is that J.M. Barrie's original version is also witty, sophisticated, and delightfully odd. The Darling children, Wendy, John, and Michael, live a very proper middle-class life in Edwardian London, but they also happen to have a Newfoundland for a nurse. The text is full of such throwaway gems as "Mrs. Darling first heard of Peter Pan when she was tidying up her children's minds," and is peppered with deliberately obscure vocabulary including "embonpoint," "quietus," and "pluperfect." Lest we forget, it was written in 1904, a relatively innocent age in which a plot about abducted children must have seemed more safely fanciful. Also, perhaps, it was an age that expected more of its children's books, for Peter Pan has a suppleness, lightness, and intelligence that are "literary" in the best sense. In a typical exchange with the dastardly Captain Hook, Peter Pan describes himself as "youth... joy... a little bird that has broken out of the egg," and the author interjects: "This, of course, was nonsense; but it was proof to the unhappy Hook that Peter did not know in the least who or what he was, which is the very pinnacle of good form." An unusually large, attractive, unabridged edition with dozens of full-page illustrations and smaller vignettes. In style, Gustafson's lusty oil paintings of the pirates are akin to N. C. Wyeth's, though they have more the flavor of compelling dramatic play than real menace. His slim, round-faced, rosy children and cozy interiors are closer to Wyeth's gifted student, Jessie Wilcox Smith, while the ethereal yet mischievous fairy folk recall Rackham. This is not to suggest that the result is merely derivative, in the manner of Michael Hague; Gustafson is a talented craftsman who skillfully melds his references to past greats to create an appropriately traditional style that has enough of a contemporary aura (especially in the characterizations) for broad popular appeal. An endpaper map of ``The Neverland'' and meticulous renditions of intriguing details add to the drama and fun. A perfect gift for a family that reads aloud. A Neat Package

Hmm...., Peter and Wendy is obviously a five star book all the way, but what about Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens? Well, it's not really a complete book, first off. It's just a large section taken out of an earlier Barrie book titled The Little White Bird. So its very fragmented. Second, since it's more of a springboard the for ideas that formed the Peter Pan play than anything else, it repeats quite a bit of what we have already seen multiple times in many of the famous Peter Pan adaptations.

Even so, I did get a lot of enjoyment out of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. Aside from the first chapter (which isn't much fun if you haven't been to the gardens), I was quite entertained. Barrie's theory that people are born as birds and then turn into humans afterward is pretty wild, and I loved Peter's interaction with the girl who was captured by the fairies. Peter thought he played games the same way all real boys did but just embarassed the heck out of himself, throwing the hula-hoops or whatever those things were in the water. Poor guy.

So all in all, you have a great introduction followed by a good book fragment and topped off with an all-time classic. Not a bad purchase at all.

Why Classics are Classics

As one reads Peter Pan, one doesn't have to do much thinking to figure out why its story has achieved such worldwide acclaim. I had ridiculously high expectations of Mr. Barrie's imagination before purchasing this title, and he has fulfilled them completely.

Many parts of the story are nothing but nonsense, which I enjoy above all else. Mr. Darling, the head of the Darling family, commands his children to take their medicine after he hides the medicine he's supposed to take. He brags about how noble he is for drinking a medicine that tastes so much worse that theirs. Unfortunately for him, during his bragging his medicine is found, and the whole family agrees to take their respective medicines on the count of three. Sure enough, when three is reached, everyone except Mr. Darling takes their medicine, and Mr. Darling once again tries to hide his.

This kind of scenario is what I'd call Mark Twain nonsense. You can imagine it being true, even though it's quite high up on the ridiculous scale. Then there's what I would classify as over-the-top nonsense - AKA bull - which there is plenty of in Barrie's original story of Peter Pan. Going back to Mr. Darling, if we take a look at how he's doing near the end of the book, we find him going to and from work in a dog kennel. Ah, yes...grown men in pet taxis. What could be more fun than the "he-didn't-even-try-to-make-this-belivable" silliness of such a scene? To be honest, I don't know if I'd even read books if they all left out fun stuff like this.

Other silly parts of the book involve Wendy growing up a day quicker than most girls; the narrator claiming he hates Mrs. Darling only to call her his favorite character a few sentences later; the lost boys asking Wendy to change the characters her story just two sentences into it; the narrator using the phrase "woke into life" because Peter likes the word "woke" more than "wakened;" and my favorite, Captain Hook using a stale cake as a missle and then falling over it in the dark.

I believe the novel version of Peter Pan was written after the author had already established Peter Pan as a successful play. That may explain a lot about the colorful narration, which takes many, many literary liberties. We see everything from blatant narrator interference with the characters in the story to the shameless attempt at informing the audience that the narrator only chooses to make the events in the story happen a certain way so certain characters in the book won't be disappointed. Perhaps without these wacky (and maybe even insane) traits in the narration, there'd be no reason to read the book, since it would be no different from the play. After reading the Peter Pan novel though, I'd have to say it almost seems criminal to watch an adaptation of Peter Pan without any wacky narration.

Contrary to most adaptations of Peter Pan, the individual lost boys (of where there are six I believe) are actually more developed as characters than John or Michael Darling. Heck, at the end of the book they actually end up moving out of the Neverland to live with the Darlings and grow up to busy themselves in interesting professions.

I may not like the actual land of Neverland as much as I like the land of Oz, but Barrie's narration is unbeatable in my opinion. He could probably make a Jeopardy contestant's Friday night schedule sound exciting.

I believe Barrie has written another Peter Pan book as well, a prequel of sorts entitled "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens." It should be interesting, particuarly if it addresses what is contained in the dark dreams that haunt Peter throughout this book. Freud would have a field day with such dreams and the whole mother issue.

The only thing I expected to see in this book that I didn't see was "happy thoughts." That must have been a creation of Disney.

If I can't come up with a question around the dinner or get myself to talk to people, this book is great for making new friends, bonding with family members or meeting new in-laws for the first time, even for a romantic one on one date with a guy or girl- friend or married person. An Absolute Must, for any Electric Guitar Player, Music Producer or Recording Engineer !!!

I have been Searching for a book on Guitar Pedals, Stompboxes & Floor Effects . . . and this is ( without a doubt ) The New Bible. It has been Recently Updated & Expanded to Include even more Boutique Effects, and Also comes with an Audio CD. It is very well Written, and takes you from the Early Fuzz Face, to State-of-the Art: Strymon Effects. It includes ( conversations ) with: The Master's of Guitar Effects: Pete Cornish, Roger Mayer, Brian Wampler, Michael Fuller ( of Fulltone ) and Mike Matthews of E.H. ( Electro Harmonix ) among many others. I Love Guitars & Effect Pedals, as I play both Acoustic & Electric, and I'm also an Engineer & Producer. Picky Boyfriend actually LIKES this book!!

Bought this for my axe playin' boyfriend, who's been playing guitar for a few years but really didn't know much about pedals and wanted to get started expanding his sounds. I could only find 2 books on Amazon about Guitar Pedals, so I'm really glad I chose this one since he said it's been really helpful to him. He's learned a lot of history about pedals and what type of sounds each category of pedal will make, and he said the writer helps to keep things fun and interesting. Based on his reaction, (and he's VERY picky!), I give this book 5 stars!

Worth Reading Overall

Overall, this is a very worthwhile book. I am generally a fan of Dave Hunter’s writing and reviews in Guitar Player magazine and overall his effect pedal handbook is admirable.
Here are the pros: Hunter does a good job explaining the evolution and history of stomp boxes in the opening chapter and he does a nice job of explaining how the effects work technically in a way that a general reader could understand. I was curious to learn more about a lot of vintage pedals that I have read about in the author gives a nice overview of these classic effects. The section on the new and contemporary builders is superb providing a survey of all the boutique pedals that are out there. I was surprised but happy that Hunter gives quite a bit of love to the Danelectro line of budget stompers too. The book comes with a CD where the author demonstrates a wide variety of effects and that is really cool. There is a chapter where Hunter interviews the most famous boutique makers and he asks them all good questions. The interview with Pete Cornish, Roger Mayer, and the guy from Earthquaker Devices were all really interesting.
Now for the cons: one negative is the author’s fault and one is not. What is not Hunter’s fault is that the book is somewhat outdated. The problem with handbooks and bibliographies is that they are out of date the moment they hit the shelves. Speaking as someone who has published in music, publishers do not rush to press books that deal with the arts. So I am sure that after Dave Hunter submitted his final manuscript to the publisher it probably took one or two years for the book to actually make it to the shops. It really does take that long. So unfortunately, some really worthwhile makers were left out of this handbook the two that come to mind are Alexander pedals and VFE pedals. Now, there is something that I wish the author had not done, and that is put negative opinions about effects into his history and overview. For example, he basically says that flanger effects, with the possible exception of Barracuda by Heart, and Boom Boom Out Go the Lights by Pat Travers, are pretty much worthless. This completely ignores all the great tones that many artists have sculpted with those pedals. One thinks of goth music for example and bands like The Cure and Bauhaus. Or even Duran Duran Hungry Like the Wolf. Hunter needs to expand his horizons a bit. He talks like a guy who has never heard any music in his life except for a classic rock station. The author also says some things that I believe are factually not true. For example Hunter says that Rat distortion pedals have more bottom end than a tube screamer, but that is not the case, a Rat pedal is far more midrange heavy and more nasal than a tube screamer ever thought about being. Also he says that the Danelectro Tuna Melt has a honk to the sound but that has definitely not been my experience, and every other review I have read comments on how amp like and musical that stomp box is, it even won an editor’s pick award from his magazine. So anyway, that is my two cents. Overall I would not hesitate to recommend this book.

If there is anyone who can write a book on Lata Mangeshkar, it is Raju Bharatan.He has been associated with hindi film music for over four decades now.This book gives us an insight on Lata's aura, charisma, her struggle and also little known facts, dispute with Rafi.Read for yourself how different music directors rate her. This is a no-holds-barred, no-punches-pulled account of the most unputdownable performer in the world. A 'must-buy' for all hindi film music lovers.

Authoritative Filmography, A Little Repetitive...

I have read the "authorized biography" by Harish Bhimani and had heard that Bharatan's version is a little scandalous. Bharatan's version comes across as being a little more blunt of course, but Lata doesn't really come out in a negative light in the book in my opinion. Bharatan is definitely an expert on Lata's career, and this book is more of a filmography than a biography in many aspects, as compared to the Bhimani book. Bharatan tends to repeat many incidents and facts over and over throughout the book, which sometimes makes the narrative seem a little slow. However, this is still a good read, and certainly a good collector's item for Lata's fans for her songs through 1994 or so.

Great book for beginners

This book is one of two beginner books that I would highly recommend. The other is David Romano's Make: FPGAs: Turning Software into Hardware with Eight Fun and Easy DIY Projects. In fact, if you can afford it, I say by both. Both books are very similar. Both use Verilog as the HDL of choice. Both have projects that are worthy of following along with. Both Require minimal cost in a development board unless you want to complete all projects in the book(s). Both used Xilinx WEB ISE. Simon's book discusses the VGA video aspect of a couple of the FPGA development boards. Simon's book does a slightly better job of explaining step-by-step, David's book covers more in depth details of Xilinx Web ISE. David's book covers SDR in on project. I started out with the Zynq 7000 as a target FPGA platform but decided that the Spartan 3 and Spartan 6 would be good to understand as well due to the number of projects, books, and kits available. In the ended I purchased 6 different FPGA development boards ranging in price from about $30 to $900. Clearly I have the motivation to get totally absorbed in this subject and come from a PLA/PLD/Bitslice (geez did I just date myself?) background. Both books coupled with the Zynq Book The Zynq Book: Embedded Processing with the Arm Cortex-A9 on the Xilinx Zynq-7000 All Programmable Soc and the associated Zynq lab book The Zynq Book Tutorials for Zybo and ZedBoard are serving me well.

About the Author
Over the course of more than thirty years, in the author s career as a human resources professional, he has helped others grow and succeed through his dedication to personal and skills training and development. An only child, it fell to him to assist his parents as they aged, became infirm, and died, a responsibility he embraced with compassion and commitment. Along the way, his wife s parents and family also needed his help to maneuver through the maze of complicated decisions, forms, laws, regulations and heart-wrenching family decisions about whether to use medical devices to prolong life or to die in accordance with their wishes. Learning of his growing experience and competency, friends began to ask for his advice and council. Finding he had an aptitude and a gift for helping others bring order, dignity and a sense of calm to families and individuals facing death, he listened to family members who encouraged him to document what he had learned about eldercare planning and end-of-life decisions, and be of service. Discussing with others his plans to write this book, he immediately discovered a huge need: elderly singles and couples, adult children of elderly parents, members of the clergy, providers of eldercare services, insurance, banking, legal, investment and medical professionals all enthusiastically told him they needed a short, easy-to-understand and easy-to-apply blueprint written in layman s language for end-of-life planning. Their reactions spurred him to commit time and energy to start and complete this book. As the book neared completion and Don began to consider the reality of it actually being published, others with whom he spoke saw the opportunity for him to use the book to render even greater service. They encouraged him to use the book as the blueprint to offer continuing education classes, public seminars, speaking engagements, corporate consulting, DVDs, and family consulting to help families navigate their way through this difficult time. Great resource for the "sandwich generation" and beyond

I wish I'd had this book before my mother passed on. It contains so many ideas and hints about things one might miss - even if he or she considers herself rather "savvy." Right up-front, Don Burrows tells the reader that he is not a lawyer. I consider that fact a "plus." He's one who has "been there, done that" in taking care of end-of-life plans for several family members.

If you have an aging loved one - or if you ARE an aging person - consider getting this book (and its companion workbook) for yourself and the other decision-makers who will want input on end-of-life plans. Although I consider myself in good health, not only did I get my own copy but purchased copies for both my sons. It truly helps if all the caregivers (or potential caregivers) are on the "same page" before crucial decisions need to be made! Don Burrows puts it altogether for family members who will be involved. Save a family squabble, and get multiple copies of this book!

Is Froggy nervous about the first day of school? Well, just a little. First he has a terrible nightmare, dreaming that he almost misses the bus and shows up at school in his underwear. Then when he does wake up, he drops the milk just as he's about to pour some on his bowl of flies! Finally Froggy makes it out the door, leapfrogging the whole way, eager for all the challenges that await him in this comical, brightly illustrated tale of a daunting-but-rewarding first day at school.

Terrific for reading aloud, this is another winner in the Froggy series--including Froggy Gets Dressed, Froggy Learns to Swim, and Froggy Plays Soccer. Zip, zoop, zup are the sounds of Froggy getting dressed, and when he has to go somewhere, it's flop, flop, flop all the way. Our 5-year-old assistant reviewer had fun imitating Froggy and friends, shouting out "Frrrooggyy!" and "Wha-a-a-a-t?" at all the appropriate times. Kids will relate to the trials of the good-natured amphibian who makes lots of mistakes--he yells too loud, interrupts, and has trouble paying attention. With the support of his gentle teacher, however, he soon gets the hang of things. Before long, funny Froggy has the class, and the principal, laughing and singing along with him. We love Froggy!

If you want a light-hearted look at the first day of school, this is the perfect book. Froggy, who as you might guess is a frog, is nervous about the first day of school. So nervous, in fact, that he lets his imagination carry him away. First he has the dreaded dream about running late on the first day of school, nearly missing the bus, and arriving only to realize he's running around in his underwear! When he really does get to school, he's thrilled to find his name tag on his table. "He liked his name. It was the first word he knew how to read. It was the only word he knew how to read. He read it aloud, louder and louder. Frrrooggyy." A little too loud, it turns out, as his teacher, Miss Witherspoon, kindly informs him that it's time to pay attention. Later, as he gazes out the window, he's so impressed by the falling leaves that he topples out of his chair. Miss Witherspoon tells him, "Kindly stay in your seat, dear. . .We'll sit on the floor at circle time." At circle time, Froggy shares how he learned how to swim over the summer. He soon has the whole class going through the motions -- even the principal joins in! When his parents ask about his first day of school, he proudly informs them that he taught the principal how to swim! As Frank Remkiewicz draws him, Froggy is just your average little boy who happens to be a frog. He may have webbed feet, but he covers them with sneakers. Froggy's face is a mirror of his emotions -- wide-eyed terror when he awakens from a bad dream, pink-tinged embarrassment when he notices the principal watching his "swimming lessons."

It's Time For School and Froggy's On His Way.....

It's Froggy's first day of school and this ever enthusiastic little amphibian can't wait. He gets dressed, eats his flies and milk, catches the school bus and has no trouble finding his very own desk with his very own name on it. He's so thrilled to be able to read his name, the first word, he realizes, that he can read, that he reads it again and again, louder and louder and even louder, until his teacher informs him that he needs to keep his voice down and that it's time to be quiet and pay attention. But it's hard for him to sit still and listen and take turns, so hard, in fact that while looking out the window and day dreaming, he falls off his chair. His teacher gently reminds him to stay in his seat and that he'll be able to sit on the floor at circle time. When circle time finally arrives, Froggy has his moment. While telling the class about how he learned to swim during the summer, he starts to sing and dance, laugh and hop and pretty soon the whole class is "swimming" right along with him, including Mr Mugwort, the principal..... No one captures the essence of a busy little pre-schooler, with places to go, people to see and things to do, like Jonathan London. His funny, joyful text, full of energy, motion and silly sound effects is wonderfully depicted in Frank Remkiewicz's bright, bold, expressive artwork. Together, they show a successful first day of school, not perfect, but realistic and reassuring to youngsters getting ready for the big step. This story is just one in a delightful series of firsts and your kids will love each and every one of them. Froggy Goes To School is a winner and a good way to help prepare your children for all the fun that's ahead when school begins.

Froggy is a hilarious, lovable character!

This book is currently my five-year old's favorite! His kindergarten teacher read it to them the first week of school. The story line gives every one in our family the giggles. Our three-year old now refers to zip, zap, zup everytime she gets dressed. Cute story!
