Finally .. Head First Webdriver !!

Though i have used Selenium for more than few years, i lacked the understanding of how it worked internally and the full potential of Webdriver. I was searching for a similar book that can hand hold and explain in a step by step fashion. I really liked the way the content has been structured . Felt a little "Head First" ish. Looks like the author has squeezed everything about Webdriver out to this little book. . I would definitely say this is "THE BOOK" on Webdriver

PS: I did not order it from amazon but read it from Safari books online. I was so impressed with this book that i thought i will put my review

Its ok if you're looking to learn WebDriver, but you'll quickly outgrow it.

For an audience seeking a 'WebDriver 101' type book, this one appears pretty good. Its formatted in an easy to read and understand way. The book is primarily a digest of common WebDriver and Java methods and libraries. I am looking for a book containing advanced WebDriver concepts but haven't had any luck in my search. Returning the book because it wasn't what I was looking and also because it is very expensive for what it is: less than 250 pages and the formatting approach creates many more pages than necessary, a lot less content than you would expect for the number of pages, I see the book as a large '101' pamphlet. If you're looking to learn WebDriver, this isn't a bad book to start with but you'll soon outgrow it.

Good Guide to Learn Selenium WebDriver

Do you want to learn the ins-and-outs of Selenium WebDriver? If so, you should definitely check out Selenium WebDriver Practical Guide: Interactively Automate Web Applications Using Selenium WebDriver by Satya Avasarala (Packet Publishing).

This guide was written to help test engineers that already have some basic Java experience increase their mastery of Selenium WebDriver. The book is broken up into ten main chapters covering:

* Introduction of WebDriver and WebElements
* Advanced WebDriver interactions
* Exploring the features of WebDriver
* Different WebDrivers
* WebDriver events
* Handling I/O
* RemoteWebDriver & WebDriverBackedSelenium
* Selenium Grid
* Understanding the PageObject pattern
* Testing iOs and Android apps

The author uses an interesting approach with most of his Selenium code examples by using small working code running directly in a Java main class. This allows the reader to easily follow along and try out each code example without having to create a bunch of classes and methods to get an example to run in his or her IDE. I felt like this approach really helped me focus solely on the WebDriver functionality the author was explaining without being distracted by anything else.

I have a feeling that some people will love this approach, and others will hate it. For learning purposes, I really liked this teaching method, but be aware that this is not the way one would ultimately write test automation scripts.

I also like how this book shows how to deal with various file-handling situations like reading, deleting, copying files and directories that one may encounter when creating test cases for automation tests.

My favorite part of the book was the chapter on understanding the PageObject pattern. If you want your tests to be maintainable and reusable, using PageObject in your automation framework is a must. The author uses an example of how to go about automating different functionality for Wordpress blog application.

The examples start by running everything in main, and the author shows how to refactor out the code using the PageObject pattern. By the end of the chapter, readers should have a clearer understanding of how to use PageObject in their own automation framework.

Overall, I think this is a solid book on using Java to learn the different parts of Selenium Webdriver; however, it doesn't covers topics such as using any xUnit test runners like jUnit or TestNG, which real world selenium automation scripts will use. While this is not a definitive book on Selenium, it is a nice guide to have on your bookshelf.

About the Author
The Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw (1904-82), U Sobhana Mahathera, was one of the most eminent meditation masters of modern times and a leader in the contemporary resurgence of Vipassana meditation. He quickly distinguished himself after ordination as a scholar and teacher of the Buddhist scriptures. Placing himself under the guidance of Venerable U Narada Sayadaw and undertaking intensive training in Vipassana meditation, he mastered the technique and went on to popularize vipassana as a systematic practice beneficial for monks and laity alike.

            Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw held Burma's highest scholastic honor, the title of Agga Mahapandita, awarded to him in 1952. During the Sixth Buddhist Council, held in Rangoon from 1954 to 1956, he performed the duties of Questioner (pucchaka), a role performed at the First Buddhist Council by the Venerable Mahakassapa. Ven. Mahasi

Sayadaw was also a member of the executive committee that was responsible, as the final authority, for the codification of all the texts edited at the Council.

            Thousands of people have been trained at his Thathana Yeiktha Meditation Centre in Yangon and many more have benefited from his clear-cut approach to meditation practice available through his voluminous writings and through the teachings abroad of his disciples, including Joseph Goldstein, Jack Kornfield, Sharon Salzberg, Rodney Smith, and many others. More than a hundred branch centers of the Thathana Yeiktha Centre have been established in Burma and his method has spread widely to other countries, East and West.

            Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw is the author of numerous works on both meditation and the Buddhist scriptures in his native Burmese.

More than a Manual

I believe that Mahasi Sayadaw's text is a major contribution to the serious student of the Theravada Tradition of Buddhism. It looks and feels like a manual, but the reading has the type of personal tone to it that one would find if the teacher was within reach. Manual of Insight captures, arranges, and develops the ancient teachings of the Buddha in a way that the reader can grasp and retain and apply. It takes a skillful teacher to convey material for his/her students in this fashion. Mahasi Sayadaw does just that! While I do not think this text is for beginners, I do think that at some point he or she should make the manual an important resource for learning and memorizing. And the Index and other materials at the back of the book will further support such a cause.

“Although mindfulness in its secular applications has tremendous benefits, it’s helpful to remember that the original teachings of the Buddha are about liberation ….”(Introduction to the text at xvii). And it’s helpful knowing that’s the goal of this 710 page missive. Here’s a master’s approach to a path for the practitioner who wants to closely follow the original teachings of the Buddha. The Burmese monk Mahasi Sayadaw is legendary in the Theravada tradition. To have this foundational work available in English is an extraordinary opportunity for anyone wanting a serious spiritual practice. At a time when much of today’s Buddhist literature comes from sources from the second and third turning of the wheel, Mahasi Sayadaw draws directly from the original Suttas taken as the words of the Buddha.

How has Mahasi Sayadaw laid out the path? It begins with conduct. It stands to reason: You can’t be poisoning the ground while planting seeds. It’s difficult to make progress when your day to day conduct conflicts with the beliefs you are trying to implement. After that it’s about wisdom and means, meditation. After the initial discussion about purification of the mind and reality, the text turns to meditation as means, encompassing the four foundations of mindfulness, mindfulness of breathing and insight meditation, all based on key suttas from the days of the Buddha. These are supplemented with information packed appendixes with inserted folio. There’s an amazing English-Pali, Pali-English Glossary that follows.

It’s always great to see a book published as a sturdy hardback fit for the ages. It’s a text to be read and pondered over time, a text to be kept close and turned to again and again. If Buddhists started leaving books in hotel rooms this would likely be the book, a Theravadan Bible for a practice leading to awakening.

Brilliant and thorough book on meditation in the Theravada tradition. A great reference book to be returned to over and over for exhaustive explication of Buddhist practice. It is occasionally quaint -- for example the description of Buddhist Hells. That section in particular seems intended to scare young monks,, and for the adult reader seems to have its tongue very far in cheek. A very valuable guide for the serious practitioner.

A small slice of Boxing history

Boxing is a fantastic sport with a deep and rich history filled with many great fights and fighters. This little pocketbook(not much larger than a CD jewel case) is roughly over 90 pages and is filled with a nice snapshot of some of the most memorable fights and feuds over the past century starting from 1936 with Black American Joe Louis going up against German Max Schmeling.

Each fight description starts with a quick bio of each fighter including basic info such as d.o.b, hometown, height/weight, boxing record, and whatever title they've held up to that point. Then there is a quick background on what led up to that fight along with a short description of the boxing match and then the fallout after the match.

Each famous bout is given four full pages with two devoted to the text and the other two containing two full-color photos(some of the earlier bouts are in black & white). Some of the well-known bouts include Ali/Foreman, Tyson/Douglas, Leonard/Hagler, and Bowe/Holyfield.

This book was originally published in the UK during 2007, right before the explosion of Pacquiao & Mayweather; so there are no Pacman or Floyd Jr matches. Minor gripes would be that a few of the photos are a bit blurry/unclear and a match or two might not belong in here(or rather, a better selection could be made).
