Great book to get you started

This book constitutes an excellent choice for those wanting to learn the basics of C++ with a bias in scientific computing and numerics. There aren't many good choices out there and this book fulfils that particular objective. The author is concise and don't waste many pages with less than relevant information. It provides the reader with the core concepts and good application examples, in order to get you programming in no time. Key concepts like STL containers, function and operator overloading, Classes, Polymorphism, Templated classes, Templates, Abstract class patterns are covered. Even a chapter on the use of MPI is provide to get you started on parallel programming and the development of parallelizable algorithms for more demanding computational applications. The exercises at the end of each chapter are adequate and give a perfect balance between degree of difficulty and explained material inside the chapter. Reading the book cover to cover is relatively easy and doesn't constitute a daunting task like so many in programming. A focus on linear algebra and numerics makes the task so much enjoyable.
In brief, this book constitutes a great starting point for any Scientist or Engineer wanting to become proficient in C++ and solve efficiently problems in the scientific computing field.

Quick, clean, and effective!

This is an outstanding text for anyone who is not concerned so much with the structure and nomenclature associated with C++ but its pure application towards writing programs for science based problems (e.g. Finite-Difference, Finite-Element). The authors assume no previous knowledge of programming only that you are familiar with compiling C++ code in your native environment (Windows,Mac, or Linux). There is no time wasted on silly programs that are unrelated to scientific and engineering, this however does limit the number of examples. The code blocks within the text are clear and short resulting in ease when trying to figure out what the code is doing. What makes this book really stand out is the clear and easy-to-understand chapters on pointers, object oriented C++ , and even parallel programming. To top it off the book has a modest price tag and is only 250 pages, making it a delightful read for anyone who wants to quickly pick up C++ for writing code to solve science/engineering problems. I strongly suggest this text if your only concerned with doing computational science via programming in C++, if your interested in computer science and software engineering this is definitely inadequate.

“Real life is messy. People hurt each other, even when they love each other. All you can do is deal with it.”

WOW! Just wow!!! Cassia, I’m in awe! The Way We Rise (Book #3 of The Story of Us series) is the perfect conclusion to such a phenomenal trilogy! What a beautiful ending with an epic, mother of all epilogues! You never cease to amaze me time after time!

Secrets will be revealed and then some! Can Rory and Houston’s relationship handle the truth and its repercussions? This heartfelt and emotional read is about impermanence, acceptance, friendship, hope, love and happy beginnings. I cried, laughed, swooned, cried even more and my heart skipped a beat at a particular scene which nearly killed me! (Side note: Cassia, how could you?! Some of us have weak hearts! LOL!)

“You see, in real life, there are no happy endings, because real life, real love, has no ending.”

Fret not! We will find out what happens to all of our favorite characters (and Tessa…) that we have grown so attached to over the last two books. That’s the magic of Cassia’s masterful storytelling — she keeps it real by creating well-developed characters, realistic plots, and most importantly, the life lessons imparted will resonate with every reader. She is truly an amazing author and I love this book and series tremendously!

The Story of Us series will stay with me for a very long time to come and I’ll always hold these quotes close to my heart.

Always good writing, but this story is very juvenile w/unlikeable characters.

Writing is good. Typically I've really enjoyed this author. As others have said, the problem is that the character's are just so unlikeable! These characters do everything that just make you cringe. The heroine is weak, dependent, sorry for everything that isn't her fault, and not sorry for the rather stupid mistakes she makes over and over and over again. The "hero" is shallow, stereotypically male, stereotypes women, makes completely unforgivable mistakes, and it is not believable that he loves the heroine in any way. The best friend has some fun dialogue, but is a TERRIBLE friend for pushing these two dysfunctional and immature people together. No one seems to grow. The drama and tension is the story seems so manufactured. The parent story development might be appropriate if the protagonists were teenagers, but they're not!

There's sex, though, but nothing original or that seems to relate to the individuality of the characters at all. The trilogy is drawn out painfully. They're together, they're not. Lies, betrayal. Round and round again. The drama is senseless and no one seems to grow up. Seriously, the guy is a perfect description of a conniving douchebag, yet he's better than the "villain"? The girl is a depiction of all that is wrong with how women are seen and stereotyped.

The conclusion that made this journey worth it and more.

I should have known Cassia Leo wouldn't let me down. The Way We Rise, book 3 and the conclusion to Houston and Rory's story, was the absolute perfect way to finish this series. I have to admit I was put through the wringer with these two more than once throughout their difficult journey. Houston and Rory have faced so many bumps, so many detours, could they truly find their way back to each other? I had to put my complete faith in the author and let's just say at times that didn't seem to be enough.

What I loved most about this book was the continuing deep development of the characters. We get to watch as Houston, Rory, Kenny, Ava, Patricia, James and even Skippy(!) move ahead with their lives, despite all the tragedy and disappointment that has befallen them. With the thread of Hallie both holding them together and still sometimes keeping them apart, it was almost as if they all experienced a rebirth of sorts. Demons start to be exorcised and truths start the healing process for all of them. The horrific scene that ended The Way We Break is the starting point for this book, and it is almost a miracle that Houston and Rory even have a chance anymore. But the author masterfully lets her characters take their time and thoughtfully figure out exactly what they want. Gone somewhat is the rush to judgement that had befallen them before which was a true joy to see.

The love that started with an 11 year-old having a crush on her best friend's brother, has seen more ups and downs then was ever thought possible. But the deep-seeded affection between Houston and Rory never wavers. I found myself smiling more than I thought and oh my goodness, laughing out loud at one of the best epilogues I've ever read. These characters seem to find the right direction this time around yet only time will tell if it will all pay off in the end. Being kept guessing is never a bad thing in my opinion. It just makes you want to keep going until the very last words are read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the entire series. It is a love story that will break your heart more than once, give you some heartwarming moments and keep you riveted from beginning to end.

For acupuncturists

This should be a must read for every acupuncture student near graduation. The front part it's a slow read, highly technical if you aren't a neurologist, but still worth getting through. It has a few good tidbits that will be used in my practice, but especially it gives context to what kinds of research is being done and why.

The Science of Acupuncture

This is a useful adjunct to the pocket text by Stux and Pomerantz, but does not stand alone as a text for acupuncture. I would recommend it as a secondary text for those who already have one of the standard clinical texts, such as Deadman or Macciocia.

I read this book over 20 years ago and glad to find a copy on Amazon. If you are really interested in scientific knowledge of how acupuncture works, it is a good book for you. Remember: the book is not for leisure reading. it is a biomedical plus acupuncture based reference book. Enjoy!

This book is a MUST have for law students, paralegals and attorneys.

You may also want to buy a copy of the book "Mastering the Blue Book" or something similar to help you understand HOW to use this book.

Just remember that between the 18th and 20th edition, a lot has changed.

Sometimes the examples were just perfect. Sometimes not

Used this for papers and exams for law school. Sometimes the examples were just perfect. Sometimes not, but it worked out in the end. Tabs for the tables would have been a helpful addition like the color coding of the blue and white pages.

“Thoroughly American and utterly beautiful” is how William Shawn, his editor at the New Yorker, described E. B. White’s prose. In 1978 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the body of his work. E. B. White died in 1985

A fascinating look at the greatest city

E.B. White was a very accomplished writer. His books and essays are some the best literature we have. His short book "Here Is New York" provides a good example of his gift as a generator of beautiful prose. He wrote this piece in 1948 and as the writer of the introduction, Roger Angell states White confronts the task with the knowledge that what he writes at his time will not endure because the city is ever changing metropolis. White likes to write with a heavy use of metaphor and he constantly anthropomorphizing what the city of New York has to offer us. He speaks of three basic types of individuals who spend their day in the city: the commuter who never really gets to know the city, the native individual who takes the city for granted and the ones who move in later in life who are in love with the city and enthralled with it's bill of fare. I enjoyed the book. It was fascinating to hear him speak of the boroughs that have evolved with the city. If he were to write the essay today I think he would be dismayed by the further disappearance of the places that he cherished and yet he would continue to express the belief that it is the greatest city in the world.

A glimpse of old New York, inspiring for today's readers

I've loved E.B.White's writing ever since a grade school teacher read Charlotte's Web aloud to the class, chapter by chapter. His writing is unique, clear and memorable, whether he is writing about what he sees out his window or about life in New York walking down a busy sidewalk, masses of people all around him. While life in New York has changed significantly since E.B. White first wrote the words contained in this book, readers will find his writing also timeless in spirit and inspirational in invoking a renewed appreciation for New York and the little details that make it special. White once said of his writing: 'Writing to me is not an exercise in addressing readers, it is more as though I were talking to myself while shaving'. If only we could all be as articulate, memorable and even humorous while talking to ourselves and others! A very special book, worth reading and re-reading.
