Santiago Calatrava is dramatic both in designs and his public persona. In 2004 he captured the spotlight at the unveiling ceremont for his design for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. On a whim Calatrava got up and sketched the building, with a giant bird stretching its wing above it, for the audience to see. This latest volume on the great architect reveals a lot about his process and the inspiration behind his work. For example, his affinity for drawing the human form and winged creatures, which inspired his entry for the Church of the Year 2000 competition in Rome, which he didn't win. Of course, there are alsohis many successes, like the Puente de la Mujer (Bridge of the Woman) in Buenos Aires and the New York Times Capsule, a time capsule on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Wonderful book of photos and content highlighting Santiago's work

I bought this book for my daughter who is working towards an architecture degree. She was impressed with how well the book showed photos, and the content it contained. This book is truly a work of art in itself. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in exploring a top-notch architect named Santiago Calatrava.

the last of the english translations!

Hagiwara's art takes another step towards greatness with amazing shading and computer effects, creating some of the most detailed manga you will find. Maybe OhGreat!'s Tengho Tenge gets close to the detailed violence, but the over-the-top drama and comedy is expertly crafted. Hagi must have a stable of talent cleaning his work. Amazing all the way around on visuals, I was a little dissapointed with how few intelligent statements are made by the protagonists- nobody can finish a sentence without getting pummeled. Anyways, the hell on earth storyline kicks in, and hopefully us americans will see the end of it in later volumes, but for now this is the last one out there.

Destruction

Anthraxas is fully awaken and going about its business of destroying the world. And it isn't the only god of destruction! Lost inside the giant ship, Dark Schnaider fights on with the help of his old friends and Yoko while their allies confront an old acquintance. Finally do we get to learn something about DS's origin as we meet his creators. Now, if only could DS stop fighting THEM and gropping Nei maybe there would some hope for the Earth.

But I doubt it.

The Bastard!! series has long been one of my personal favorites and that trend continues with number 16. Without revealing too much of the story, things take a turn for the worse as newcomer Michael makes her first appearance. Things are looking bad for our heroes! Really gripping!

Cute, but nothing special

This book was enjoyable, but nothing special. It was almost a bit sad. As a dog owner and teacher I didn't see any value in this book as an educational tool or overly enjoyable storyline.

Love this series.

After getting emails that our boys emails were always forgetting to bring things to school, I downloaded Smart but Scattered and this popped up as a recommendation. I sent it to both my sons' Kindles and have received praise from our 4th and 6th grade teachers that they have seen a remarkable improvement. I offered to read and discuss it with both of them and they both declined and they just became organized on their own. I think younger kids will need more help and guidance.

Son was able to say "hey- I already do that!" and also got real quiet to read other parts that I think may have been a good suggestion for him.

Seems like a good book where kids can skim & pick out what interests them - not a heavy read that takes the concentration that most ADHD don't have...Lol.

Organizing help at last!

I only gave this 3 stars because I must have read the description wrong when I bought this, since it appears to be for middle school students or maybe a little older, instead of for adults. The information looks to be quite well written and is wonderfully illustrated, but the advice was more for school related things than for what I need.

About the Author
Cade Courtley was born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Boulder, Colorado. He spent most of his young adult life in the outdoors and upon graduation from the University of San Diego he was immediately commissioned as an Officer in the United States Navy and began Navy SEAL training (BUD/S). After several intense tours as a Platoon Commander that had him operating around the world, Cade decided to leave the SEAL teams to pursue other challenges. He was the host of the Spike TV and Discovery Channel show Surviving Disaster and appears as a regular commentator on CNN and Fox News.

EXPAND YOUR COMFORT ZONE

You know your current comfort zone, defined as the daily routine you do and the things that make you feel secure, content, and in control. However, most of our daily comfort-zone rituals will leave us unprepared to deal with even the smallest discomfort and will certainly render us incapable of handling an emergency or life-threatening challenge.

Challenge Your Limits and Daily Routines

Push the boundaries of your comfort zone at least once a day. There are so many opportunities to do this without attempting all at once to become an ultra-marathon runner, although this is a great goal. You must first expand your mind to the possibilities of doing certain things that you previously believed unachievable. Start with small steps and note progress by keeping track; make a list, and check off all the things you do each day to challenge yourself, both physically and mentally. Ultimately, by expanding your comfort zone you will increase both your physical and mental toughness, which are the keys to survival.

I believe that if you first focus on changing small things, you can begin the process of thinking differently, and ultimately achieve the goal of acquiring the SEAL mindset of survival, which will allow you to endure anything. You will quickly see that doing things differently makes you think differently. Observe your current routine and then start by doing simple things another way. For example, use the stairs instead of the elevator to take you up only a few floors. Climb at a reasonable pace and know that when you reach the top, you have just expanded your comfort zone. When in your car, don’t fight to get the space closest to the store, but purposely look for one that will make you walk. Force yourself to meet three new people and learn at least five things about them. If you have to balance your checkbook, leave the calculator in the desk and make your brain complete this task. Open up the contact list in your phone and memorize five numbers each day. You must seek out ways to expand both mind and body. Start paying attention to how you think about things. If you expand your comfort zone in this manner, you will be better able to do the rest. If you already exercise or jog, for example, increase your distance or speed. Run that extra mile, or run it a minute faster. Do that one additional push-up. Try holding your breath for a minute, and then try two. When in the shower, after scrubbing down with the warm water you usually prefer, finish the last thirty seconds with a blast of cold water. By pushing your physical limits, you are also forcing your brain to expand its comfort boundaries, thus gradually making yourself physically and mentally tougher.





Now that I am out of the Navy and getting older every day, I continue to push my comfort zone by engaging in activities I did when I was in SEAL team, including skydiving, shooting, climbing, and long swims. Instead of doing these things in preparation for a mission, I do them not only to maintain these very perishable skills, but also to keep my mind and body sharp—I still push the comfort zone and know that this will allow me to be every bit of the warrior I used to be.



Everyone’s comfort zone is different, so for some of us, expanding it means starting with drinking one less beer or forgoing dessert. Yet all of these little daily victories will bring us confidence later, especially when our lives depend on it. It’s so much easier to do nothing, and it seems natural not to bother, but I tell you: These first exercises are essential in changing your mindset and eventually can be the very things that will separate the survivors from the victims.



Here is a visualization I use: I like to imagine that pushing my comfort zone daily is similar to rolling a boulder up a hill. If I let it, the rock will always want to tumble back down, and I’ll have to start from the bottom again. Expanding the comfort zone on a daily basis will actually make it easier to get that boulder closer to the summit—and to our success or ultimate survival.

Dashing ex-Navy Seal Cade Courtley , star of Spike TV's just-launched "Surviving Disaster" show, comes out with his own survival guide. He's the real deal, but there's not much new in the book, if you have read Robert Peltons guides and also Cody Lundin, etc. However, it's still good stuff, and if you don't have one of these real life disaster books, this may be the book for you.

"After making it through Seal training and the stuff I did as a Seal, I guess you start to feel like you can make it through anything. When you have that kind of a mindset, there's a certain confidence that goes along with that. The confidence is really helpful when all hell breaks loose," he notes. "We try to teach people, `Yeah, that just happened. Take a breath. Let's get that brain working and we can problem solve our way through this.' It's nothing too advanced where you'd need 20 years experience of hand-to-hand combat."

A good read to help you to pay attention

Well written how not to get your self dead book. The author covers many survival subjects and makes some great suggestions. Even if you are not the physical specimen of a Navy Seal there is information that you can and should use. Most of what is offered is common sense which many in our society is lacking in an age that could kill you if you are not paying attention. This book brings focus as to what we should be paying attention to. Can you survive an active shooter in a mall? This book increases you chances in that scenario and many others.

There is no new text by Copland, only a new introduction by composer William Schuman, which is more an encomium to the "Dean of American Music." In large measure, the book owes its success to its simple, jargon-free language and engaging style. One wishes, though, that Copland might have added an assessment of the musical scene of the past 30 years. The bibliography has not been updated and is thus virtually useless, with the most recent entry 1955. Nonetheless, the book remains an excellent guide for the novice. About the Author
Aaron Copland’s well-known and highly regarded compositions, performed and recorded extensively throughout the world, include the Pulitzer Prize–winning ballet Appalachian Spring, as well as Billy the Kid, Rodeo, Lincoln Portrait, and the film scores of Our Town and The Heiress. On being awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 1986, Copland was praised for his “uniquely American music that reflects the very soul and experience of our people.” During his career, Copland taught composition at Harvard and the Berkshire Music Center, lectured all over the United States, and wrote Our New Music and Music and Imagination. He died in 1990.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

THIS IS A BOOK FOR PEOPLE AT ALL LEVELS - LAYMAN, COMPOSER, OR ADVANCED MUSIC LOVER. "Why should one have to learn or need guidance on how to listen to what one is hearing?" is the question that William Schuman asks in his Preface. "The answer is simple. Listening to music is a skill that is acquired through experience and learning. Knowledge enhances enjoyment."
What makes What to Listen for in Music so invaluable is that it is the ONLY book on musical appreciation written by a GREAT COMPOSER. "This is a composer's book," Aaron Copland states. "Given the chance, every composer would like to know two very important things about anyone who takes himself seriously as a music lover...1. Are you hearing everything that is going on? [and] 2. Are you really being sensitive to it?"
The only shortcoming of this book is that it should be taken as part of a class to make sure that one gets everything out of it. It would be great if it came with a CD of all the examples to which Copland makes reference. However, each chapter does end with a list of "recommended listening." To make specific points, Copland does include sheet music (but I didn't read this book sitting next to my piano). However, these problems are minimal, considering we live in an age of the cheap CDs and music downloads.
Copland covers EVERY aspect of music, starting with "how we listen," - on the sensuous plane, the expressive plane, and the sheerly musical plane. He then goes on to explain to us the Four Elements of Music - Melody, Rhythm, Harmony, and Tone Color. We find out about all the musical instruments, their history and classifications. We find out about all the genres in music - Sectional Form, Variation Form, Fugal Form, Sonata Form, Free Form. Did you know that Sonata Form includes symphonies as well? And that symphonies grew out of operatic overtures?
This is a book that bears re-reading. A lot of technical jargon gets bandied about and, although Copland does his best to explain it all, it still gets a tad confusing. I advise reading this book, listening to a LOT of music, and then reading it again. I know my own knowledge and appreciation of music has grown from reading it. Now I DO have an idea of the nuances I should be listening for in a Mozart piano concerto.

Anybody who has any interest in music owes it to themselves to read this book. In this definitive guide to musical enjoyment, Aaron Copeland takes a look at how to listen to music intelligently. Two questions are addressed in this interesting, in-depth study: Are you hearing everything that is going on? Are you really being sensitive to it?
It doesn't matter what kind of music you enjoy, everyone can get something out of this book. Though relating more closely to classical music, Aaron Copeland's ideas for listening to music will give the reader a better appreciation and understanding of whatever music they listen to.
From reading this book you will gain insight into the creative process of a composer. In laymen's terms, the book describes the way composers write music as well as how they actually listen to it. It explains that there are three separate planes upon which music is listened to. They are the sensuous plane, the expressive plane, and the sheerly musical plane. Copeland goes on to tell how music is heard on each plane and explains how each works, which I found very interesting.
Overall, Aaron Copeland's What To Listen For In Music is a good book that I recommend to anyone who has an interest in music or enjoys listening to it. A whole new level of listening ability can be gained from reading this book. It explains music from the composer's point of view, giving you insight into how music is composed, and how to listen to it, which gives you a deeper appreciation of music.

Everything you always wanted to know about music . . .

Aaron Copland built much of his career on writing modern "classical" music that could be enjoyed and appreciated by the common listener. He felt that modern music should communicate to the non-musician, as well as the more experienced one. He knew that if the listener understood what made up the basics of musical composition and structure, that the experience of listening would be tremendously enhanced. This book is in the spirit of that goal, and like his most accessible music, Copland achieves this with a brilliant, conversational eloquence that is neither pandering nor pretentious. I found this book to live up to its title, "What to listen for in music." Copland takes the reader on a step by step journey of what components make up a piece of music; from the different type of composers, through the creative process and the individual elements that support the musical architecture. These elements include rhythm, melody, harmony and tone/texture. Once these are clear, he then is able to talk about a musical work as a whole, which includes its structure the different forms that it takes (eg. sonata form, synphony, opera, etc.) One does not need a musical backround to understand and enjoy this book, and yet the seasoned musician will also find a refreshing review of the basics of music. Copland loved music and this is always obvious in his joyful presentation. All one need to have to benefit from this book is a curiosity of music and its mysterious ability to move mountains.

Great coverage

This is really a great book on "how to" do a paint job on your car. I liked Boyd Coddington's How to Paint Your Hod Rod a bit better, but it has less scope than this book. It covers a new paint job, but this book covers everything...paint types, repairs, resprays and even paint care. A great book.

Well, I have mixed feelings about this book.

There is a lot of useful information between the covers of this book and it was a great help but I'm left with this vague sense of having missed something even though I read it cover to cover. There is substance but it's a little light on detail which the 170 pages would tend to bear out. While I gained a lot of clues, I still feel that I need to read another book in order to really know what I'm doing. Some how-to books are satisfying like a shotgun blast at close range... Their authors just lay out what you need to know and deliver it in a way that imparts confidence. This book is like being hit by a scattergun from 100 yards- you pick up a lot but don't really know exactly how much flew right on by. This guy kinda meanders all over the place seemingly without a coherent outline. I felt that the author really knows his stuff but left out a lot of necessary context that a beginner like myself needs to form a clear picture. And the typos, (hundreds!) missing sentences, and even missing paragraphs just about drove me nuts at one point. But they lessen towards the end of the book. Still, the price was right and it brought me to 5 on a scale of 10 so I can't really complain too much.
The publishing date of '98 dates it a little also. Seems like everything is going the way of computers and computer information where 6 mos. old is already obsolete. These poor authors are just going to have to realize that if they have the impulse to write a book then they are going to have to resign themselves to update them every two or three years or they will rapidly become useless! All knowledge and technology is just moving so danged fast these days.
So, I would buy it again but I ain't about to spend hundreds of bucks on paint and create a disaster until I find some better information.

This book is great for anyone looking to get started up painting cars, motorcycles, etc. I used this book and have saved a great deal on custom paint jobs restoring classic trucks and street rods. Well worth the money!

it's my favorite. The characters are well developed and interesting

EVERYONE should listen to Cabin Pressure, it's my favorite.

The characters are well developed and interesting, and each show's plot is different but there are overarching themes as well.

I have listened to the whole series (27 episodes) probably a dozen times over the last 2.5 years and it still makes me laugh out loud.

About the Author

T.S. Srivatsan, Professor of Materials Science & Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Akron (OH, USA), earned his M.S. in Aerospace Engineering in 1981 and his Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering in 1984 from Georgia Institute of Technology (USA). Dr. Srivatsan joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering faculty at The University of Akron in 1987. He has authored or edited 57 books, delivered over 200 technical presentations, and authored or co-authored more than 700 archival publications in journals, book chapters, book reviews, proceedings of conferences, and technical reports. He is a Fellow of (i) American Society for Materials International; (ii) American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and (iii) American Association for Advancement of Science.

T.S. Sudarshan earned his B.Tech in Metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras), and completed his M.Sc and Ph.D in Materials Engineering Science from Virginia Tech (VA, USA). He is President and CEO of Materials Modification, Inc., which is at the forefront of research, development, and commercialization of advanced materials utilizing novel processing techniques. He is a Fellow of (i) American Society for Materials International; (ii) International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering; and (iii) Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. He has also produced numerous papers [175+] in journals and edited books [30+].
