About the Author
Virgil Elliott is a world-respected painter and writer. He is included in the Art Renewal Center’s Gallery of Living Masters and one of only twenty-four artists worldwide with certification from the American Portrait Society. A Signature Member of the American Society of Portrait Artists and the Society of Western Artists, and the chairman of the ASTM International Task Group on Artists’ Pastels, he lives in Pennegrove, California.

Very informative and valuable resource - worth every $$

I found this book to be extremely informative and well-written. Not only covering medium "nuts and bolts" (valuable information such as rating paints from fat to lean, drying rates and transparency ratings - all subjects barely touched upon in any other art training I have received), but also the foundations of art mastery; drawing skills, perspective and color theory.

He covers the evolution of traditional oil painting methodologies - from Flemish to Venetian to French Acedemic; Masters who used hybrids of these methods to suit their subject matter (e.g. Rembrandt), and even a nod to Bouguereau, whose rendering of human skin is par none.

In all, I'm extremely pleased with this book - it has many highlight-worthy sections and lists worth copying and keeping near the easel.

I give it 4 stars for two reasons - I would have liked to see some more visuals, including some modern Masters from the resurgence of classical realism (it's nice to have modern-day inspiration) and I would have likes some commentary from him on the newer supports, such as panels from Ampersand. I believe this book is still in its first edition from 2007, so perhaps a later printing will include these.

Once upon a time, I attended one of the top-rated public art schools in the country - and left that program because of their focus on expression over mastery. This book has given me some of the knowledge I really hungered for.

Making a Painter an Artist

I wish I had had access to this book 20 years ago. I have been painting for over 40 years but I have only ever been exposed to hobby classes and art groups, which are all very well and good for the beginner, but in my experience don't instruct those who aspire to get really serious and want to challenge themselves in their pursuit of creating art, rather than just do middle of the road paintings.

Mr Elliott takes the reader on a journey through all the materials and classic techniques of how the masters of old Europe went about their work and explains how, with commitment and care, a serious student of the craft of painting in oils can become the artist that a serious painter aspires to be. Buy be prepared to read because while there is plenty of pictures to illustrate the writer's instruction, it is in the writing that there are gems to be found in the instruction and tips to be learned here.

But also true is that this book will give the sign posts to making great art but it will be the individual painter's drive that achieves that art.

Not just how to paint using classical techniques, but why they were used.

This is a fantastic book, presenting a number of classic painting techniques, materials, and more. Each classical process is described in detail, with examples, and accompanied by a discussion on why and how these techniques were developed and used. The materials section puts forth a lot of effort to explain what each material tends to perform well at, with the discussion largely centered around durability. The issue of archival longevity for a painting is a serious one if you plan to sell your paintings, and this book covers the topic in detail. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in classical painting approaches, as well as understanding how to create durable, archive quality paintings.

A lovely lyrical novella, a dreamy remembering of coming of age in Brooklyn in the 1970s

Exquisite! Such a beautifully written piece of work, that it felt like poetry, both in the flow and the content. It has an ethereal dreamy quality and is full of rich metaphors.

I have been struggling with my review of this book, because whatever I seem to write doesn’t really do the book justice. It is such a unique beautiful piece of writing. The story begins with August, the narrator, returning by train to visit her dying father. She catches a glimpse of Sylvia, a childhood friend and memories come flooding back to her. The ethereal quality of the book has in part to do with the fact that the narrator is looking way back on an earlier part of her life; in part that she is remembering her childhood, one in which she could not comprehend or accept the death of her mother; and thirdly the poetic quality to the writing.

The idea that August thinks her mother will return and convinces her younger brother of the same, feels so honest, so real, so a part of how children really cope with the loss of a parent. Within the book, different cultural rites of death are mentioned reminding the reader that death is there, but not letting us know the actual circumstances of the mother’s death until later.

Once August arrives in Brooklyn with her father and brother, the father cages the children in the house worried about the dangers of the outside world. This backfires as her younger brother falls through the glass window injuring his arm in his attempts to watch the outside world. At this point, August and her brother are allowed outside to experience the world.

August reminisces about her female friendships from this era in her life. She had developed a close-knit group of girlfriends who become her “home, ” her family, and this allows her feel alive again, after feeling cooped up in their Brooklyn apartment. Together these girls feel stronger and braver. Their friendship gives them a sense of safety, of home, of togetherness that is lacking from their home environments. They grow into puberty together, date, experiment with sex. They confide in each other, things that they do not feel safe confiding to their own parents.

August’s mother’s words about not trusting female friendships keep echoing back to her. “Don’t trust women, my mother said to me. Even the ugly ones will take what you thought was yours.” August learns how this can be true as the friendships begin to slip and in some cases fracture. However, for a time, the friendships are a beautiful thing and allow the girls to feel powerful in a world where they are vulnerable, on account of being female, minorities and poor.

This reflection is of Brooklyn in the 1970’s in a neighborhood that is turning from white to black. While August finds comfort in her friendships, her father finds comfort in religion. It is a stunning look at this place and time period, the struggles these girls faced as they came of age and the hope and courage needed to face it. I highly recommend this to everyone.

My past revisited through J Woodson' s eyes

Because I was born and raised in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn from mid 30s to mid 50s when I left to find the growing me, it was fascinating to have this sacred place so owned by a gifted artist of a different race in a different era, and yet still have memories evoked. Our stories may be different but the human experience of love, friendships, betrayals all resonate.

Unusual story structure but beautifully written

“Another Brooklyn” follows August as she remembers her tween and teen years in Brooklyn. Her father moved there from Tennessee when August was just eight years old. August and her younger brother used to people-watch from their apartment window. It’s from there that she spotted the three girls, Sylvia, Angela and Gigi, who would become her close friends for the next eight years.

August and her friends’ lives are far from perfect. Yet they try to hold on to their dreams just as reality rears its ugly face on every street corner. Out in the world, they confront drugs, sexual predators, poverty, racism, prejudice, and violence while at home; they must deal with parental absence, whether it is physical or emotional. This is a story of female friendship that evolves and changes, bringing both joy and pain as the four girls transition into adulthood. The amazing thing about this book is how Jacqueline Woodson can pack so much in “Another Brooklyn” yet it has less than 200 pages. She may be economical with words, but she doesn’t shortchange readers when it comes to delivering an emotional and thoughtful story of loss.

About the Author
Mr Steve Bonsor is a general dental practitioner working in private practice in Aberdeen. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1992 with Honours and won the Hepburn Prize for the best senior student in dental hospital practice. In 1997, he gained a Diploma in Post Graduate Dental Studies from the University of Bristol. Also in that year he was appointed a part-time clinical teacher at Dundee Dental Hospital and School and Honorary Clinical Teacher at the University of Dundee in the Sections of Operative Dentistry, Fixed Prosthodontics, Endodontology and Integrated Oral Care and taught there on a part time basis until 2006. He was admitted as a member to the Institute of Learning and Teaching in 2001 and awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2007. He completed a Master of Science at the University of Bristol graduating in 2008.

He is heavily involved in postgraduate dental education having lectured throughout the UK. He has also extensive experience of tutoring the dental team, in particular dental nurses. He has recently been appointed as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. He is currently actively involved in research having published original research articles in peer reviewed journals with his main research areas being Photo-Activated Disinfection and the clinical performance of dental materials. He is a referee for a number of dental journals. He is a key influence of a number of dental material and equipment manufacturers.

Gavin Pearson trained as a dentist at UCL Dental School. In 1969 he was appointed as a lecturer in Conservative Dentistry at UCL Dental School and subsequently at the London Hospital Medical College Dental Institute. During this time he carried out work on the early composite filling materials. He was appointed Senior Lecturer/Hon Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at UCL in 1979 and in 1987 he became Head of Biomaterials at Eastman Dental Institute and Hon Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. He was appointed Reader in 1990 and was awarded a personal Chair in Biomaterials in 1996. He became head of Biomaterials in relation to Dentistry at QMUL in 1999 and was also Associate Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Biomedical Materials at QMUL until his retirement in 2006. He has collaborated on a number of research projects with dental manufacturers.

His research has concentrated on the clinical problems associated with dental material and has been involved in the research and development of minimally invasive techniques using antibacterial PDT and glass ionomer cements. He has published over 140 peer reviewed papers. He has been associated with the University of Bristol Open Learning for Dentistry [BUOLD] courses since their inception in 1990. He has lectured in both the US and Europe and has been the UK Principle Expert on Glass Ionomer Cements at a number of ISO meetings.

A must read if you are in the field of Thanatology

I had read much of the earlier (2007) edition and this 2013 edition is much improved. It is full of important information and the latest research in the field of dying, death and bereavement. But don't think you are buying a novel. It is a true textbook, not meant for the casual reader. It gives an excellent overview of the field and is chalk full of information. Especially useful is the updated information on current resources including books and websites.

This book can, at times, be difficult to plow through. There are a large number of different authors (each chapter has a different writer) and, as such, the writing can be uneven. However, the editors did a good job keeping the various authors on task. The chapters tend to be short (5-10 pages) and focused. The book is very well organized and easy to jump around in depending on the topics you may be wanting to read about. It even includes some authors with "non-American" perspectives and experiences in the field.

If you are wanting a little more "fun" read in the field then I would suggest reading Lynn DeSpelder's The Last Dance: Encountering Death and Dying or Robert Kastenbaum's Death, Society and Human Experience (11th Edition). However, if you really want to dig deep into the field as it is currently, then the "Handbook of Thanatology" is a good place to start.

One Final Note: To those who are studying to take the Association of Death Education and Counseling (ADEC) certification in thanatology (CT) exam, then this is a MUST READ. In fact, take careful and detailed notes and you will do fine on the exam.

Poor editing for a textbook

As a graduate student in a thanatology program, ordered this as a required textbook. It gets the job done, but I'm not sure what happened with the editing. I've noticed countless errors, mostly with missing words, making sentences not make sense. It's as if several individual chapters were not edited. There are tense changes within sentences. This is very frustrating, and I am very disappointed that I had to spend so much money on poor editing.

About the Author
Steve Krug (pronounced "kroog") is best known as the author of Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, now in its second edition with over 350,000 copies in print. Ten years later, he finally gathered enough energy to write another one: the usability testing handbook Rocket Surgery Made Easy: The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Finding and Fixing Usability Problems. The books were based on the 20+ years he's spent as a usability consultant for a wide variety of clients like Apple, Bloomberg.com, Lexus.com, NPR, the International Monetary Fund, and many others.

His consulting firm, Advanced Common Sense ("just me and a few well-placed mirrors") is based in Chestnut Hill, MA. Steve currently spends most of his time teaching usability workshops, consulting, and watching old episodes of Law and Order.

New & Improved!

There has been a noticeable shift in technology design - it's all about us - the users! In light of this change, Steve Krug has updated his bestselling guide to web usability. As he says himself, "The basic principles are the same even if the landscape has changed, because usability is about people and how they understand and use things, not about technology. And while technology often changes quickly, people change very slowly."

His core common sense approach remains the same, but with all the new devices that people are interacting with these days, the competitiveness of a product relies on how easy it is to use. You could pay for a professional like Krug to determine how usable your product is, if you can afford it. But even then, it's important to learn the principles yourself so you know whether the person you hire is considering and addressing the right issues. Happily, this book practices what it preaches, it's written in a friendly chatty way and well designed. In short, this great book goes down easy.

I've come across a lot of design books in my time and several in my last year while pursuing a higher education in graphic design - including a personal favorite The Practice of Creativity: A Manual for Dynamic Group Problem-Solving, which Krug strongly endorses in a previous edition's "Recommended Reading". It would have been so great to have this book at my disposal while I was studying website design because the information is so well organized. For my classes I was provided Peachpit software books, which I found a little hard to follow for being too text heavy. If you are going to educate on design principles, you should follow similar rhetoric. Krug's book organizes information in color, in tables, and often have entertaining illustrations.

You MUST get this if you do Web development, online PR, apps, or other user interface and/or online communication

This is arguably the best introduction to Web usability, and much of its philosophy is applicable to design and communication generally. The original edition revolutionized my (and many others') approach to Web development and online PR. This newer edition improves on the original with no loss or faults. I'd like to see an even newer one that covered mobile apps and such, but that would just be icing on the cake. While this is not as in-depth as Nielsen Norman Group usability reports, those are highly focused on very specific matters, are expensive, and are intended for high-pay Web developers with major clients. If you're just getting started, or don't do this for a living, or are the webmaster for a single organization, this book is probably most of what you need for shapening your Web architecture intuition regarding what will effectively communicate and what will not. Note: This is not a technical HTML coding book, it's a user interface and communications psychology book.

Bible of web usability common sense

I am a doctor, a surgeon, so you would say why are you reading “Don’t make me think”. Good question.
Today we all live by the web, through smart phones and PCs, apps and websites, not to mention social networks that I personally have not yet discovered. The web and its usability is part of our common language, a new alphabet, grammar and syntax we have had to learn to live in our world and get along in our profession and free time. But if you met a person who was only able to speak and not read and write you would say he is an analphabet, the same is not true for a user of the web from whom no one expects she/he be able of composing or better designing a website or an app.
Presently, many domain professionals are willing to designing web content necessary for their specific necessities, but not yet able to do it by themselves and look for “primers” or “how to..” books to help them start or go pro in this activity.
“Don’t make met think” is I believe one of the basic books to learn from. Not only it is easy to read and very clear, but it is also funny, entertaining, full of useful information and at the same time systematic and complete.
Steven Krug is evidently a guru of web usability and he has reached the 3rd edition of his book that has filled the minds and hearts of thousands of computer people. It has been and is so popular I believe because it gets to the point of how to think before starting to design. In some ways it is almost a psychology text or better it uses a practical psychological approach to give simple directives to follow in order to keep on the right tract while carrying out design. It sidetracks into information on attention, the use of time, expert remarks on design and interfaces and also on how people actually think. A whole chapter is focused on ethics of web design: a web site should be a “mensche” or as we would say in Italian “un uomo d’onore”, a man of honor, and another on mobile applications with all their space related problems.
So, if you are a information technology specialist or if you are an amateur wanting to learn how to design an app or a website, this book is a good point to start from. Read it, love it and treasure its teachings.
