Excellent resource for perfecting monologue readings

I am an actor who has performed on television and film for more than ten years. I costarred on a Nickelodeon series called "Space Cases," and appeared in various movies and sitcoms. As a student of theater (I currently attend UCLA), I can honestly say that this book is a wonderful guide in honing one's monologue performances. It is also a joy to read. The characters are unique and from all walks of life. Some of the pieces are hysterically funny. Others are touching--even gripping. The monologues helped me embody a wide array of personalities, expanding my limits as an actor and experimenting with different character types. The writing is superb: Stevens exhibits a strong command of the colloquialisms and slang young people employ in their day-to-day existence. The stories are not wordy or effusive--the language is powerful, yet simple. One of the monologues landed me a part in a UCLA play this spring (ironically, the professor commented more positively on my selection of the monologue than my reading of it). This book is a valuable tool for any young aspiring actor--from their early teens to their college years.

No substance, mostly awful

All the 5 star reviews have got to be paid for or friends of the writer. I honestly cannot even believe how bad this is. I am a theatre director and coach. For a living, I prepare students for their theatrical endeavors.
The vast majority of monologues in this book are unusable.
The characters are weak, one-dimensional stereotypes. The content is borderline creepy at times. Some of the things the characters say sound so forced that it would make me uncomfortable to be the listener.
So many of them are whiny, weak, or insulting toward the "other character" which in an audition, you need to remember that is who you audition for. We don't want you to be yelling at us with weak insults. We want to see range. These monologues have ZERO range. No depth. No strength. They are surface, fluffy pieces I'd never give a student. I feel insulted that this is being passed off as quality audition material. I'm sorry, someone has to be honest.

The bulk of it can sound like you are reading through a university thesis

A very interesting and insightful work by Dr. Lieberman. You can tell he has put his life's work into uncovering these universal truths regarding humans and social behavior. There are many factoids regarding communication and people management that I will remember the rest of my life. However, the book reads incredibly dry. The bulk of it can sound like you are reading through a university thesis, which makes sense given the author's credentials and primary field of study. His attempt at making the data heavy experiments digestible is to sandwich the base material between an intro and conclusion in layman's prose. Unfortunately, sections sometimes read as: Intro, A+B=C, A+B≠D, Conclusion. While the non data oriented parts read well, I wish he could have injected that tone throughout the book without sacrificing information. With all that being said, if you are interested in understanding more about the human condition, I absolutely recommend this book. Great insight for managers or those working with large teams.

Ah ha moments

Social, by Matthew Lieberman, is a good read for students and professionals that need to understand how our Social brains work. I teach social awareness skills and this has been interesting to understand what controls and keeps our brains engaged. I gave it 4 stars because it is not compelling reading. That being said, it contains groundbreaking information that needs to be digested and considered and shared.

Looking Beyond the Obvious

You may be tempted, as I was, to say "DUH!" to the affirmation that we are wired to connect. Nonetheless, Dr. Matthew Lieberman has presented some fascinating and compelling hard data to show how meaningful conversations and well-being are so intimately related. In the leadership development programs that I design, I have found the information in this book very valuable.

This is a wonderful and highly readable book, which does a superb job of opening up a fascinating but hithertofore totally unexplored area of film and television. A must for anyone interested in the relations between fiction, reality, and drama and wants to know how to enter this fast growing script field and how to write punchy and dynamic scenarios. Absolutely five stars.

About the Author

Curtis James Jackson III (born July 6, 1975), better known by his stage name 50 Cent, is an American rapper. He rose to fame with the release of his albums Get Rich or Die Tryin (2003) and The Massacre (2005). Both albums achieved multi-platinum success, selling over twenty-one million copies combined. He is the author of From Pieces to Weight: Once Upon a Time in Southside Queens (S&S, 2006). He lives in New York.

Robert Greene is the author of three bestselling books: The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction, and The 33 Strategies of War. He attended U.C. Berkeley and the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he received a degree in classical studies. He has worked in New York as an editor and writer at several magazines, including Esquire, and in Hollywood as a story developer and writer. Greene has lived in London, Paris, and Barcelona; he speaks several languages and has worked as a translator. He currently lives in Los Angeles.

This is the step by step action plan for applying The 48 Laws of Power - and likely to be Robert's most misunderstood book

Robert Greene has created a powerful book that will likely be misunderstood by most or discounted by many because of the co-author and his past, this will be a big mistake. In my opinion Robert Greene has taken a fearless step by choosing to cast 50 Cent as a modern day hip hop Napoleon, while I see the correlation, I'm not sure I'd go quite that far.

The 50th law is about two topics near and dear to my heart, fearlessness and hustle. In this case the term hustle is used to describe the street hustling tactics and the criminal endeavors of 50 Cent, what you can't overlook is that much of what 50 Cent did was in fact criminal and had no socially redeeming qualities. That said, he showed amazing insight for a child with little education other than that received from trial and error and other hustlers. He showed an intuitive grasp of core concepts of power, of strategy, and of outright manipulation. Robert discusses those tactics in great detail and in a very interesting way, the text is incredibly motivating. I constantly found myself wondering what I might do if I applied the same kind of hustle in an ethical, legal way to my existing business and kept coming back to the same conclusion, the business would grow and my competitors would be impacted.

The key ideas in the book are:

1. Intense Realism - A very candid look at the value of seeing things as they are
2. Self Reliance - A look at making everything your own and controlling yourself and your surroundings
3. Opportunism - Finding the value in negative situations and making the best of ever situation while turning it to your advantage
4. Keep moving - Move with the chaos, don't give others a chance to pin you down, change your appearance to fit the environment
5. Aggression - Get over your fears of confronting people
6. Authority - The person at the top sets the tone
7. Connection - Think of the public first and their changing needs. Begin with their demand and create the appropriate supply.
8. Mastery - Learn to master boredom, outlast your rivals, learn early to endure the hours of practice and drudgery to build a proper foundation to grow from
9. Self Belief - Push beyond your limits. Your sense of who you are will determine your actions and what you get in life.
10. The Sublime - Confront your mortality

While this book does not contain the depth of history you've probably come to expect from Mr. Greene's writing, there is plenty of it here and it is well chosen to support the topic of each chapter.

The Hustlers Bible

Being a fan of Robert Greene (I often consult his works for advice), I was delighted to get my hands on his fourth book. It looks quite unusual, with is leather-look cover and gold pages one could mistake it for the Bible. This is Roberts first collaboration and a surprising one at that, with rap-mogul 50 Cent. 50 embodies the rags-to-riches myth, and with such an unusual life, he has - a lot - of stories to share. In addition to historical examples, Robert uses a living person as his main inspiration, and this makes the book feel more modern and alive. 50's experience, coupled with Roberts razor-sharp analytical insight result in this `Hustlers Bible'.

The good stuff starts with the introduction, where the 50th Law is revealed on p.18: "The greatest fear people have is that of being themselves". This is no an empty proverb, the book very clearly explains its meaning. The main theme of the book is fearlessness. Robert and 50 mapped out ten common types of fears and the power one can obtain by overcoming them.

Chapter 1 - Intense Realism x Fear of the ugly truth
Chapter 2 - Self-Reliance x Fear of being alone
Chapter 3 - Opportunism x Fear of threatening events
Chapter 4 - Calculated Momentum x Fear of change
Chapter 5 - Aggression x Fear of confrontation

Chapter 8 - Mastery x Fear of boredom, fear of practice

1) presentation of a problem/fear, illustrated with examples from 50's life (and historical examples),
2) the fearless approach - describes how to overcome this fear, the principles, in general terms,
3) keys to fearlessness - offers practical strategies for mastering these principles (here's where the work is at)

The idea is to apply the strategies (described under `keys to fearlessness') to your own life.
The book itself is a very entertaining read, but to reap its benefits you'll have to re-read it, seek out connections in your own life, and act accordingly. Forget the 'easy fix', as written in Ch. 8: "The real secret for power in this world lies in accepting the ugly reality that learning demands patience,..."

One topic that has resonated with me personally, is the "trap of the middle class": having a stable job, without real satisfaction with your life and career, but without an urgent reason to change your job into something more exciting, or to live life into a more fulfilling way. It's a wake-up call.

The book feels like there has been great care put into it (in contrast to many self-help titles that offer empty wisdom). If you're willing to put in the effort, "The 50th Law" will help you to move on to a freer and more satisfying life.

It's Like Nothing You've Ever Read!

The 50th Law, a book like nothing you've ever read before. I first expected a continuation of Mr. Greene's other books (48 LOP, TAOS); this is to say the least completely different. Fearlessness is the basic focus of The 50th Law. The book explains how fear can cripple most people from living their lives well and with power. It also gives examples of those who lived on the fringes of society, who applied themselves fearlessly to the mastery of their own particular goals in the midst of despairing circumstance. The book's co-author 50 Cent, is one of Robert Greene's most adept pupils who rose in fame, money and power in a few short years amidst many life-changing setbacks. What an inspiration for anyone who wants more than their current situation in life can give them right now. This book is for the hustler, he doesn't think like everyone else because so many people are afraid to have his responsibilities and therefore don't enjoy his rewards. That's the book's "audience", the hustlers who make ways were none seem to be available and prosper because of it. This is why the hustler will always find a way to have power in this world. Read this book with an open mind, you may realize that fear is the only thing holding you back from what you truly want. It may be hard, gritty and abrasive yet this is the only book that will tell you the truth about how exactly one rises to power in this world; it's not pretty and it's fearless.

Grade 5–7—Grk, a small white dog with black eyes, finds Tim Malt near Tim's London home, setting into motion a series of fantastic, heroic, often fast-paced and sometimes humorous adventures. Grk belonged to Natascha Raffifi, the daughter of Stanislavia's ambassador to England. When a cruel dictator takes control of this small, mountainous country in Eastern Europe, the Raffifis are arrested and returned to their homeland. Tim's parents will not let him keep the dog, and so he sets out to find its owner. His ingenuity gets him from England to Stanislavia, where he is propelled into action that ultimately reunites Grk with Natascha and her brother, Max, and results in their escape from prison. Some characters are caricatures; many are likable and move the events quickly if implausibly to a satisfying resolution. Max, in particular, is used to insert occasional political commentary that seems to foreshadow his future. By novel's end, the children and Grk settle in with the Malts in London, with the promise of another adventure in which the murder of Max and Natascha's parents will be avenged.—Maria B. Tim soon learns that the family has returned to its county, which is now under the rule of a despot. Taking brave but drastic action, Tim flies with Grk to Stanislavia and learns the ambassador and his wife are dead and the children, Natascha and Max, are in prison. Soon Tim is embroiled in wild events and political chaos. Despite some stock characters, this is fast paced and entertaining. The author-narrator maintains a presence a la Lemony Snicket, interjecting satiric, sometimes thought-provoking commentary on politics and economic privelege, along with warnings of dire events to come. great kid's adventure

My son loves this series. It has a lot of adventure, and he is learning a little geography along the way (shhh don't tell!)

Fun AND intelligent!

Grk is one of those rare books that doesn't treat kids like dumbies.

Tim's adventure is fun, interprising, intelligent, whimsical and very satisfying. It's a really good, inventive story, not just a rehashing of Harry Potter or just another depressing magic/vampire/unhappy homelife book. He relies on himself, his own emotional and intellectual resources, and has an adventure 10 times more fun than any vampire has ever had.

Scary stuff happens, but real scary stuff, not stuff made up of darkness and magic. And it's all stuff Tim handles with typical Brit wit and composure, which makes the story even more humorous and exciting.

If your kid is ready for something fun AND intelligent, this is the book for him/her!

About the Author
John Hughes has taught in Austria, Poland, and Italy, and worked as Director of Studies for Business English in two schools. He has also managed a teacher training department in Cheltenham, UK. Currently he is living in the USA. Jon Naunton is a freelance teacher and materials writer. After graduating with a BA in English, he worked for International House in Italy and Libya. Returning to England he taught at the ILC executive school before joining IH London where he worked until 1996. He taught English at all levels and teacher trained on many RSA/UCLES Certificate and diploma courses. Michael Duckworth is a teacher and author who has worked in schools in Africa, the Far East, and Europe. He has written a number of successful courses, including several aimed at preparing students for, or leading up to, Cambridge ESOL examinations.

One of the best!

I own a private tutoring company in Houston, Texas, the hub of the oil and gas industry here in the States. In my opinion, most Business English books get lost in one direction or another. Truthfully, where does one start when trying to teach Business English - the field is simply too wide. But Business Result is great for any professional in any field. Albeit, it's British English but that only shows up in a few places. This book is a well-kept secret. Great for developing and expanding business vocabulary and phrases. I pick and choose my favorite exercises and it works very well. The best I've found so far to teach Business English! My professional students really like it.

Excellent ESL text for business

I've used this series for over 3 years tutoring business people on short-term assignment in the U.S. It more than met my expectations and my students praise the books.
The series has lots of great features:
*Interactive CD Rom for individual review/testing
*Audio extracts with speakers of various forms of English and different accents
*Real examples, interviews, and case studies from international companies
*Realistic use of vocabulary, expressions, and communication and grammar points
This product is unlike any other I've used. It integrates language skills seamlessly, targets high-interest specific goals, and provides succinct, useful tools such as practice files, phrase summaries, and grammar reviews in each of the four levels (Beginner-Inter-High Inter-Advanced)
