About the Author
Nikola Tesla (1856 –1943) was an inventor, mechanical engineer, and electrical engineer. He was an important contributor to the birth of commercial electricity, and is best known for his many revolutionary developments in the field of electromagnetism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tesla's patents and theoretical work formed the basis of modern alternating current (AC) electric power systems, including the polyphase system of electrical distribution and the AC motor. This work helped usher in the Second Industrial Revolution. Born an ethnic Serb in the village of Smiljan, in the Austrian Empire, Tesla was a subject of the Austrian Empire by birth and later became an American citizen. Because of his 1894 demonstration of wireless communication through radio and as the eventual victor in the "War of Currents", he was widely respected as one of the greatest electrical engineers who worked in America. He pioneered modern electrical engineering and many of his discoveries were of groundbreaking importance. In the United States during this time, Tesla's fame rivaled that of any other inventor or scientist in history or popular culture. Tesla demonstrated wireless energy transfer to power electronic devices as early as 1893, and aspired to intercontinental wireless transmission of industrial power in his unfinished Wardenclyffe Tower project. Because of his eccentric personality and his seemingly unbelievable and sometimes bizarre claims about possible scientific and technological developments, Tesla was ultimately ostracized and regarded as a mad scientist by many late in his life. Tesla never put much focus on his finances and died with little funds at the age of 86, alone in the two room hotel suite in which he lived, in New York City. NOT Nikola Tesla's MY INVENTIONS

This is NOT Nikola Tesla's MY INVENTIONS, published in the ELECTRICAL EXPERIMENTER magazine, February-June and October, 1919 issues. It is a corrupted version of Tesla's autobiography titled THE STRANGE LIFE OF NIKOLA TESLA. The original document was published in booklet form a copy of which was found in a used bookstore in 1994, transcribed, and published on the Internet. The booklet was subsequently found to contain significant errors, omissions, revisions and also some additions that did not appear in the original 6-part serial text.

The title describes it - Not My Life - My Inventions

The introduction material in this book written by Ben Johnston is well prepared, informative, and brief. It is a good introduction to the rest of the book which is Tesla's writing.
Tesla's own words can be tedious, but hey the language has changed a bit in the last 100 years. He takes a few rabbit trails and talks much of his inventions not what he thinks and feels. I would really like to know why he liked pigeons so much but he never says. What Tesla doesn't say, gives us insights to what is important to him. No serious study of Tesla can neglect this work.
For a more in-depth historical biography of the man see, Margaret Cheney's "Tesla, Man out of Time". ISBN 0-88029-419-1

A shoddy edition of a text deserving of better

The presentation of Nikola Tesla's fascinating life and work is manhandled in this edition of his autobiography, My Inventions.

The text is full of typographical errors; the letter "i" (referring to Tesla in the first-person) is rarely ever capitalized, and there are numerous misspellings of simple words. Paragraph breaks seem to have been inserted at random and, when compared to other editions, do not correspond with the others' layouts or chapters.

I do not know what Tesla's manuscript looked like or who is responsible for typesetting it for BNPublishing, but it is most telling that Amazon's link to look inside this book redirects to a different edition.

Over the years I've become frustrated at the lack of clear information about building projects that utilize propane.  Few fuels are safer to work with when handled correctly.  But few sources of information explain how to do so.  In the course of teaching myself how to build flame effects, foundry burners and other propane based fire projects, I decided that I needed to share what I'd learned with other makers.

Make:Fire combines an introduction to and reference for working with propane and then puts that knowledge to work in a series of projects.  Each project builds on the skills learned in its predecessors so that you can start out with no experience and learn as you go.  I've always been very frustrated with project books that leave out critical information or assume you have special knowledge.  I've tried to write this book clearly, completely and in a way that is open to beginner as well as experienced makers.
Fire art is exciting, but the real dangers are in ignorance.  Make:Fire is my attempt to make these types of projects safer and more accessible to interested artists and makers.

About the Author

Tim Deagan has written for Make: magazine, Nuts and Volts, and other technical publications. He is a licensed Texas Flame Effects Operator and the Flame and Safety Coordinator for the Austin Mini Maker Faire. After years of building flame effects, aka "booshes," in the local Burn community, Tim began teaching classes called "Propane 101" and "Build Your Own Aluminum Foundry" to help other interested makers create their own projects. As a former firefighter in the Brent Volunteer Fire Department and captain of a Red Cross Disaster Action Team, Tim has always believed that the most exciting pursuits are at their best when safety is fully understood and becomes part of the culture. Tim is also a contributor to the open-source 3D CAD program OpenSCAD and an active member of the Handibot CNC and Printrbot 3D printer communities.

Great book!

I wanted to make a propane-powered flame thing for an event like Burning Man. I'm an experienced maker, and have closely examined other propane flame effects, so I thought I knew what to do. But... it could be dangerous for someone with no experience.

This book filled my need perfectly. It goes through some example projects in great detail. It also explains enough of the theory and general principles so it's clear *why* things should be done the way they are. I'm going to build one or two projects from the book to gain experience, then do my own.

The book is clear, very well written, and fun to read. I highly recommend it.

Jump Start for Foundry Burner Construction

I'm a noobie with hopes of being a hobby metal caster. So far, I've just been accumulating information and materials.

The author is very safety oriented, and does a good job of identifying fittings and components are suitable to use with propane. Several chapters are about building fire effects. Even so, I found chapter 2 (Equipment and Parts) and chapter 8 (Venturi Burner - a Ron Reil burner) to be very helpful.

Great background on how to work with and properly handle Propane. Safety First! Gives the reader all the background and science needed to design very fun propane projects safely. I real enjoyed the detail given to all the parts and assembly tips to make sure you do it right.
Wish I had this reference when i started and glad i have in my library now.
If your going to poof, get this book.

The title says it all

I understand psychology way more now. You will be able to impress your friends by telling them they are sick with things like various behavioral disorders, depression, and borderline personality disorder. They will appreciate your candor. If they don't, they're probably really sick and you may want to prescribe medication for them. Seriously, your friends should learn to take constructive criticism. You're the one with the psychology book, not them.

Rented this book last semester after seeing it was MUCH cheaper than my schools bookstore. It came on time and in perfect condition and I was able to send it back without problems. Because of this experience using the amazon rental system, I rented another book for another course and hope to have the same experience with the book!

This textbook has everything you need to know about psychology. A perfect introductory book into the subject of psychology with a writing style that is easy to understand; it also has a review section for each chapter to help you remember the main points, which helps when you have to study for exams. It makes psychology a lot more simple, making it easier for you too fully understand some of the complicated areas of psychology. It is also a good psychology reference book. I used this for my psychology class, I liked it so much I kept it instead of trading it in at the end of the semester. By the time you read this review there will probably up to a later edition, but I'm sure they will also be just as good as this edition; good series.

His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, some of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans. Maslow described various needs and used the terms "Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and Love, Esteem, Self-Actualization and Self-Transcendence" needs to describe the pattern that human motivations generally move through. Maslow studied what he called exemplary people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally ill or neurotic people.

Executive Summary:
This is a review of A Theory of Human Motivation by A.H. Maslow. The target audience of the book are individuals who are looking to expand their understanding of Maslow’s theory of motivation. The book is an in-depth look into Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and how it pertains to the motivation of individuals.

Strengths:
The strengths of the book are that it is written in a way that it can easily be understood by the average person and also that it is well written, without any noticeable grammatical mistakes. In addition, Maslow also uses commonly encountered examples to not only help the reader understand what he is getting at but also to help the individual see how it truly pertains to each individual.

Weaknesses:
The weaknesses of the book are the lack of detail and depth in regards to the testing of the theories; not all individuals are equal when it comes to their motivations and secondly, the layout of the book could be better, the sub-topics seemed to run all together and in my opinion, one column instead of two would allow for larger print

Reviews:
There have been many reviews in approval of this book, while there have only been two reviews in disapproval of this book. One of the disapproved reviews states that this book is not what they expected it to be, and that “it does not have the triangle.” This response must lead others to wonder as to whether this reviewer even read the book, due to the fact that the entire book was based directly in conjunction to the triangle (hierarchy of needs). The triangle itself is on the front cover of the book, however, it is not posted again anywhere else in the book. The triangle instead is written about within the book. It is broken down into each of its sections, in which each section is then given an in-depth review of how and why Maslow came to include that section within his hierarchy of needs. It is definitely easier to agree with another reviewer when he/she states that this book “gives clear reasons and excellent proof for his (Maslow’s) theories.”

Recommendation:
I recommend this book because it is a great insight into how people grow, learn and why they choose to do the things in which they do. This concept can be used to help understand infants, teenagers, adults, criminals, business leaders, entrepreneurs…the list goes on and on.

A group is composition of many individuals with similar drives and goals therefore understanding the severity of the contentious world we live in makes more sense than just the chaos we see. The understanding of such may lead to a solution. If not, we have yet to see the worst of it.

Can't understand the 5-star reviews here, this was a huge disappointment

The 5-star reviews here mystify me. I found Peggy Klaus's book "Brag!" to be borderline unreadable and completely unhelpful.

It had a great title/subtitle and stellar Amazon reviews, so I figured this would be the book to help overcome my natural reluctance to tout my own achievements. Instead we have a supposed "communications expert" -- who readily admits that she feels like a fraud because she's not really a communications expert -- giving us commonsense advice that can be distilled into about five sentences. For example, the "12 Tooting Tips for Bragging" she ends the book with look like something anyone would come up with in 10 minutes when tasked with creating such a list: "Have a sense of humor" and "Use it all: your eyes, ears, head and heart" and "Know when to toot" and "Think about to whom you are tooting." OK...

The rest of the book is similar: full of trite observations and sweeping generalizations that sound like they were written by someone with not much corporate experience. Like "People on all rungs of the corporate ladder -- from entry level to middle manager, from heads of divisions to heads of companies, from Silicon Valley to Wall Street -- had a hard time talking about themselves." Heads of Silicon Valley and Wall Street companies have a hard time talking about themselves? If you find that sentence credible, then buy this book, because there are lots of others like it in here.

Don't brag too much, but let people know your accomplishments when it matters, and tell it in a quick story they'll remember. That's what this book takes 200 pages to say. I've never seen such an obviously bad book get such high ratings on Amazon.

Excellent Read - Good Tips to Keep Your Accomplishments in Front of People

While Peggy wrote this book primarily for women, as a man I got some valuable tips on how to promote myself. She encourages all of us to have a "brag bag" of sound bites available whenever anyone asks - "So what have you been up to lately". It truly is not bragging to simply tell people what you have done. One point that hit home was the concept of "credit theft" in organizations. If you aren't telling lots of people what you have accomplished, then there is a high probability that someone else will take credit for it.

It is hard to keep perspective on what you have done. You may think that you are just doing your job. Peggy gives a way to keep a log of what you have done so you can tap into the brag bag when you need it. If you just take a look once a week or once a month, you would be surprised at how much you did.

At first her terms "brag bag", "brag bites", "bragologue" and "brag nags" seem contrived and self serving so she could make her point. However, after the first several chapters, these terms really come to life and help you focus on getting your message across to everyone you meet.

This book is an easy read. I found myself going quickly through her material and picking it up again a few months later when I needed a refresher. I'm using it now to help me with my performance review.

The art of Brag is an essential tool. It needs to be taught early as a foundational skill in schools to build and reinforce confidence and self-esteem. As the parent of a teenager looking for her first job it is difficult to convince my daughter that her life experiences as a babysitter, summer camp counselor in training and mentor to a struggling student in an ESL program, makes her a valuable employment candidate for a 'real' job. I hope that by re-framing her volunteer positions into brag bites and bragologues she can appreciate her worthy-ness and develop a skill that will serve her well over a lifetime!

About the Author
Mr. Anthony J. Bertino has taught biology for more than thirty-nine years, having a special interest in forensics. Since 1975, he has had a wide range of teaching and professional experiences related to science education. He taught at Canandaigua Academy (in New York) for thirty-four years before retiring in 2001. Currently a clinical supervisor responsible for supervising student teachers with the University of Albany Graduate School of Education in New York, Mr. Bertino also teaches AP Biology at College Board Summer Institutes. He has received many awards and honors. He has written articles for THE SCIENCE TEACHER and has created many activities related to crime scene investigation. Bertino teaches Forensic Science teacher preparation seminars, AP Summer Institutes, and is a frequent national and state workshop presenter. His professional affiliations have included NABT, NSTA, Director of the Outstanding Biology Teachers Award for New York State, STANYS, CTA, NYSUT, NEA, United University Professors, Rochester Alliance Promoting Science, and the New York State Regional Biology mentor network.

Patricia Nolan Bertino received a BA in Biology Secondary Science from Oneonta State College in 1972 and a MS in Science Education from Union College in 1977. Patricia taught high school biology, health, biotechnology and forensic science and was the ski club coordinator/ advisor at Scotia-Glenville High School, Scotia, NY. After thirty four years in the classroom, Patricia and her husband Anthony (Bud) Bertino co-authored Forensic Science: Fundamentals and Investigations (2008) textbook for high school students. Patricia and her husband remain very active in teacher education through presentations at many national and state science teachers' conferences. For the past ten years, they have organized and taught the Bertino Summer Forensic Institute for Teachers. In addition to teaching high school, Patricia's experience includes: Editor AP Biology CDs ( NeoSci ) and Biology Review Book The Living Environment; Presenter for Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 1995-2013; Developer for curriculum on immunology and HIV for CIBT (Cornell Institute for Biology Teachers); Co-taught AP Biology summer institutes with Anthony Bertino; Subject area representative in biology for Science Teachers Association in New York State (STANYS) for the Eastern Division; Publications include articles in The Forensic Teacher and STANYS Bulletin; Professional affiliations with NABT, NSTA,STANYS, CIBT, NYSUT, NEA; Past honors and distinctions include recipient of NABT (National Association of Biology Teachers) Outstanding NABT Teacher Award for New York State and a Tandy Scholarship.

I love forensics and this textbook is very helpful for the introduction into forensic science. My class used these textbooks and I decided to buy my own because I loved it! The fingerprint chapter was my favorite.
