Painfully boring and confusing
By Lizard
I bought this book because I wanted to get into informatics. This book is painfully boring to the extreme. Very hard to understand--it gets obsessed with a supercilious expression of sentence structure rather than trying to communicate information. It says nurses are not very well educated when it comes to computer technology and all must get advanced degrees to be worth something. It was very repetitious as well. I read paragraphs over and over again, and I had not a clue what I read. If you have problems sleeping, read this book. I guarantee you it will cure you of your insomnia so in that respect it is outstanding. The author must have bent over backward to present such a dull and uninteresting book that my original intent to get into informatics was just destroyed. I decided not to get such a certificate.

The Worst
By Ricky Martins
Had to buy this book for a course I was taking, and it was awful. Painfully repetitive and they used far too many abbreviations, many of which were never explained. The online access is just as useless at the book itself. I'll be glad to be rid of this book when my course is over!

Convoluted. A concise volume would be preferred.
By In Minnesota
This was a required text for a graduate course in nursing. While there were some very important concepts covered in the text and while I appreciated the focus on informatics for nurses, it was very poorly written. Even the simplest concepts were presented in long, drawn-out sentences and paragraphs spotted with grammatical and punctuation errors. Did the editors even read this text? I will strongly recommend that my professor use a different book next time around. If I had the time, I'd edit this book and send it to the authors, so they could come out with the concise version for their next edition. I hope they will hire a great editor with a large delete key to whip this text into shape! Then it will be a very useful text for nursing students!

Monumental book!
By Konstantin Pliev
Absolutely incredible textbook, excellent drawings and pictures. I just wish the binding were better: mine started to crack from the very beginning, but it could be just my bad luck

Update: reordered the item and it arrived damaged again. I think the problem is two fold: bad packaging and not a good quality of assembly(shame on a publisher, books of this price rank should be assembled impeccably)

Marc Stevens' Government: Indicted, by Marc Stevens

Government: Indicted is an indictment of the concept of government itself, not any particular group of people calling themselves a government. G:I is in two parts: the indictment showing the psychological damage and economic damage caused by the concept; then an explicit model for dealing with and resolving attacks by bureaucrats from traffic to taxes to possessing the wrong type of plants.

Government: Indicted is over 450 pages of proof the concept of government is irrational and cannot be reformed. The "but for" principal is also used to prove this irrational concept is the direct cause of damage by those acting as government and their victims, the mass of humanity that complies with and enables them.

The model for resolving attacks has proven effective across political lines. Not only has the author helped get attacks dropped, but others have replicated the results in Australia, Canada, England and New Zealand. One can not only predict what will happen, one can replicate it. It’s more proof that approaching these attacks from a rational standpoint - just looking at the evidence and asking questions - is so effective. No law degree necessary.

An irrefutable indictment of the idea that government possesses any legitimate basis whatsoever
By Alexander
Do the constitutions, codes, and various government laws actually apply to anyone? Is there such a thing, factually, as the State? When bureaucrats compel us under threats of violence to answer their charges -- do they really have any standing?

The uncontestable answer to these questions is NO! Governments routinely use complete fictions, based on NO facts or evidence, in order to control and dominate us. And at the end of the day they have only guns and physical force...but NO evidence their laws actually apply.

If you're into truth -- wherever it may lead -- including a no window dressing look at the psychology and corruption of the bureaucrats inside EVERY legal system, police force, and tax agency, then get this book now! Then get another copy for a friend!

The State and Government Indicted
By Bill Buppert
Marc Stevens’ Government Indicted by Marc Stevens is also penned by a personal friend who I hold in the highest esteem, not only a fellow jazz spectator but a keen observer of the collectivist chaos that is Vichy Amerika. The book is a philosophically thick almost psychedelic trip through the power lens common to libertarian analysis.

What makes the libertarian commentariat so incisive and intellectually devastating in its examination of small and large problems alike is the notion that power hates a vacuum and no matter what the minarchist or collectivist nostrum to solve it, psychopaths rush in to fill the void.

Marc hosts a nationwide radio show where he takes on the court and legal system and takes the robed government employees to task. Marc has no law degree otherwise he would probably be a collectivist drone after that communard obedience vocational training called law school.

He asks the essential question: is the system arbitrary or based on facts? His answer is a categorical assertion that the entire system is a house of card built by psychopaths to allow one group of people to exist at the expense of others employing the intellectual fairy dust of American jurisprudence which he shows to be based on a foundation of shifting sand and fallacious premises.

Like James Bovard, he uses actual cases and painful anecdotes by the bushel to make the point that the American system is rigged against freedom and liberty. Marc’s primary task appears to be the destruction of the credibility of the state, particularly in America. One could contend he views the state as a psychopathic entity, which can’t help but cause destruction, it is built into the system’s DNA. This may account for the cyclical destruction of all nation states over time.

Marc’s solutions are too many to detail and most are relevant but I maintain a healthy skepticism that jury activism and using the legal system against itself will work its magic over time. I don’t accuse Marc of being a Sovereign but it skirt that lunatic territory closely and I remain unconvinced at its efficacy. The other solutions for de-legitimizing a psychopathic society to a free and voluntary society is compelling.

I recommend his book with the few reservations except for the editing difficulties. A few minor annoyances are typos and grammar mistakes, which can be easily remedied once this book comes out on Kindle much like I commented on Boston’s book. The electronic publishing and self-publishing industry is a revolutionary event for liberty oriented authors because the collectivist gatekeepers at the traditional publishing houses can no longer block the dissemination of ideas injurious to the prison sates dotting the globe, including America.

The only book that lets artists explore the highest levels of realistic oil painting.

As more and more artists today look to the past, there has been a tremendous resurgence of interest in painting realistically—in creating convincing illusions of three-dimensional depth on two dimensional surfaces. How did the Old Masters create their masterpieces? What kind of education allowed these great artists to create such beautiful work, and how can an artist learn these lessons today? Traditional Oil Painting answers those questions and many more. This comprehensive sourcebook explores the most advanced levels of oil painting, with full information on the latest scientific discoveries. Author and distinguished artist Virgil Elliott examines the many elements that let artists take the next step in their work: mental attitude, aesthetic considerations, the importance of drawing, principles of visual reality, materials, techniques, portraiture, photographic images versus visual reality, and color. Traditional Oil Painting helps artists master the secrets of realistic painting to create work that will rival that of the masters.

Very informative and valuable resource - worth every $$
By Justine
I found this book to be extremely informative and well-written. Not only covering medium "nuts and bolts" (valuable information such as rating paints from fat to lean, drying rates and transparency ratings - all subjects barely touched upon in any other art training I have received), but also the foundations of art mastery; drawing skills, perspective and color theory.

He covers the evolution of traditional oil painting methodologies - from Flemish to Venetian to French Acedemic; Masters who used hybrids of these methods to suit their subject matter (e.g. Rembrandt), and even a nod to Bouguereau, whose rendering of human skin is par none.

In all, I'm extremely pleased with this book - it has many highlight-worthy sections and lists worth copying and keeping near the easel.

I give it 4 stars for two reasons - I would have liked to see some more visuals, including some modern Masters from the resurgence of classical realism (it's nice to have modern-day inspiration) and I would have likes some commentary from him on the newer supports, such as panels from Ampersand. I believe this book is still in its first edition from 2007, so perhaps a later printing will include these.

Once upon a time, I attended one of the top-rated public art schools in the country - and left that program because of their focus on expression over mastery. This book has given me some of the knowledge I really hungered for.

Making a Painter an Artist
By Hugh Bird
I wish I had had access to this book 20 years ago. I have been painting for over 40 years but I have only ever been exposed to hobby classes and art groups, which are all very well and good for the beginner, but in my experience don't instruct those who aspire to get really serious and want to challenge themselves in their pursuit of creating art, rather than just do middle of the road paintings.

Mr Elliott takes the reader on a journey through all the materials and classic techniques of how the masters of old Europe went about their work and explains how, with commitment and care, a serious student of the craft of painting in oils can become the artist that a serious painter aspires to be. Buy be prepared to read because while there is plenty of pictures to illustrate the writer's instruction, it is in the writing that there are gems to be found in the instruction and tips to be learned here.

But also true is that this book will give the sign posts to making great art but it will be the individual painter's drive that achieves that art.

Not just how to paint using classical techniques, but why they were used.
By Evan
This is a fantastic book, presenting a number of classic painting techniques, materials, and more. Each classical process is described in detail, with examples, and accompanied by a discussion on why and how these techniques were developed and used. The materials section puts forth a lot of effort to explain what each material tends to perform well at, with the discussion largely centered around durability. The issue of archival longevity for a painting is a serious one if you plan to sell your paintings, and this book covers the topic in detail. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in classical painting approaches, as well as understanding how to create durable, archive quality paintings.

Another Brooklyn: A Novel, by Jacqueline Woodson

National Book Award Finalist
New York Times Bestseller

The acclaimed New York Times bestselling and National Book Award–winning author of Brown Girl Dreaming delivers her first adult novel in twenty years.

Running into a long-ago friend sets memory from the 1970s in motion for August, transporting her to a time and a place where friendship was everything—until it wasn’t. For August and her girls, sharing confidences as they ambled through neighborhood streets, Brooklyn was a place where they believed that they were beautiful, talented, brilliant—a part of a future that belonged to them.

But beneath the hopeful veneer, there was another Brooklyn, a dangerous place where grown men reached for innocent girls in dark hallways, where ghosts haunted the night, where mothers disappeared. A world where madness was just a sunset away and fathers found hope in religion.

Like Louise Meriwether’s Daddy Was a Number Runner and Dorothy Allison’s Bastard Out of Carolina, Jacqueline Woodson’s Another Brooklyn heartbreakingly illuminates the formative time when childhood gives way to adulthood—the promise and peril of growing up—and exquisitely renders a powerful, indelible, and fleeting friendship that united four young lives.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of August 2016: Another Brooklyn, Jacqueline Woodson’s first adult novel in twenty years is nothing short of remarkable. Her protagonist, August, is one of four girls coming of age in 1970s Brooklyn who become “always and all ways” friends until one by one their lives take different turns. Woodson is able to convey so much with so little—her words and sentences are beautifully crafted to fill you with emotion and understanding in a single line that feels effortless and light. The girls’ lives move to the beat of disco rhythms, the chant of Double Dutch, and later the pleas of their boyfriends to do just this one thing…Their neighborhood is both lifeline and trap, as so many places are, and it’s hard to say for sure why some break the tether and others become what they once scorned. Another Brooklyn is a breathtaking account of growing up female and black in a time of conflicting pressures and crushing assumptions, and in doing so creating a lifetime of memories. --Seira Wilson, The Amazon Book Review

Review
“Woodson’s unsparing story of a girl becoming a woman recalls some of the genre’s all-time greats: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Bluest Eye and especially, with its darkly poetic language, The House on Mango Street.” (Sarah Begley, Time)

“An engrossing novel about friendship, race, the magic of place and the relentlessness of change.” (People Magazine)

“Woodson manages to remember what cannot be documented, to suggest what cannot be said. Another Brooklyn is another name for poetry.” (Washington Post)

“Woodson does for young black girls what short story master Alice Munroe does for poor rural ones: She imbues their everyday lives with significance.” (Elle)

“In Jacqueline Woodson’s soaring choral poem of a novel…four young friends…navigate the perils of adolescence, mean streets, and haunted memory in 1970s Brooklyn, all while dreaming of escape.” (Vanity Fair)

“Another Brooklyn joins the tradition of studying female friendships and the families we create when our own isn’t enough, like that of Toni Morrison’s Sula, Tayari Jones’ Silver Sparrow and Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde. Woodson uses her expertise at portraying the lives of children to explore the power of memory, death and friendship. (Los Angeles Times Book Review)

“…it is the personal encounters that form the gorgeous center of this intense, moving novel...Structured as short vignettes, each reading more like prose poetry than traditional narrative, the novel unfolds as memory does, in burning flashes, thick with detail...” (New York Times Book Review)

“With Another Brooklyn, Jacqueline Woodson has delivered a love letter to loss, girlhood, and home. It is a lyrical, haunting exploration of family, memory, and other ties that bind us to one another and the world.” (Boston Globe)

“Woodson writes lyrically about what it means to be a girl in America, and what it means to be black in America. Each sentence is taut with potential energy, but the story never bursts into tragic flames; it stays strong and subtle throughout.” (Huffington Post)

“Gorgeously written and moving, Another Brooklyn is an examination of the complexities of youth and adolescence, loss, friendship, family, race, and religion.” (Jarry Lee, Buzzfeed)

“[E]ntwined coming-of-age narratives-lost mothers, wounded war vets, nodding junkies, menacing streetscapes-are starkly realistic, yet brim with moments of pure poetry.” (Elle Books Feature)

“The novel’s richness defies its slim page count. In her poet’s prose, Woodson not only shows us backward-glancing August attempting to stave off growing up and the pains that betray youth, she also wonders how we dream of a life parallel to the one we’re living.” (Booklist (Starred Review))

“Another Brooklyn reads like a love song to girlhood…” (Bustle)

“emotionally resonant work” (Seattle Times)

“Jacqueline Woodson’s Another Brooklyn is a gauzy, lyrical fever dream of a book.” (Vox Magazine)

“There are nothrowaway sentences in Another Brooklyn — each short, poetic line feels carefully loved and polished. The first half of this novel asks urgent questions; the second delivers uneasy, heartbreaking answers. At its core, this book is about fragility, how light shines in the broken places.” (Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards)

“Jacqueline Woodson is a gorgeous writer…lyrical prose, really, really beautiful.” (Emma Straub, New York Times Bestselling author of Modern Lovers and The Vacationers)

‘’…And Sister Jacqueline Woodson comes singing memory. Her words like summer lightning get caught in my throat and I draw her up from southern roots to a Brooklyn of a thousand names, where she and her three ‘sisters’ learn to navigate a new season. A new herstory. Everywhere I turn, my dear Sister Jacqueline, I hear your words, a wild sea pausing in the wind. And I sing…” (Sister Sonia Sanchez)

And I sing…” (Edwidge Danticat, author of Claire of the Sea Light)

“In this elegant and moving novel, Jacqueline Woodson explores the beauty and burden of growing up girl in 1970’s Brooklyn through the lens of one unforgettable narrator. The guarded hopes and whispered fears that August and her girlfriends share left me thinking about the limits and rewards of friendship well after the novel’s end. Full of moments of grief, grace, and wonder, Another Brooklyn proves that Jacqueline Woodson is a master storyteller.” (Angela Flournoy, author of The Turner House, a finalist for the National Book Award)

“Jacqueline Woodson’s Another Brooklyn is a wonder. With a poet’s soul and a poet’s eye for image and ear for lyrical language, Woodson delivers a moving meditation on girlhood, love, loss, hurt, friendship, family, faith, longing, and desire. This novel is a love letter to a place, an era, and a group of young women that we’ve never seen depicted quite this way or this tenderly. Woodson has created an unforgettable, entrancing narrator in August. I’ll go anywhere she leads me.” (Naomi Jackson, author of The Star Side of Bird Hill)

“Jacqueline Woodson’s spare, emphatic novel about young women growing up in 1970s Bushwick brings some of our deepest silences-about danger, loss, and black girls’ coming of age-into powerful lyric speech. Another Brooklyn is heartbreaking and restorative, a gorgeous and generous paean to all we must leave behind on the path to becoming ourselves.” (Tracy K. Smith, Pulitzer Prize-Winning author of Life on Mars and Ordinary Light)

“A stunning achievement from one of the quietly great masters of our time.” (Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review)

“Another Brooklyn is a sort of fever dream, containing both the hard truths of life and the gentle beauty of memory. The story of a young girl trying to find herself in the midst of so many conflicting influences and desires swallowed me whole. Jacqueline Woodson has such an original vision, such a singular voice. I loved this book.” (Ann Patchett, New York Times Bestselling Author)

“Woodson…combines grit and beauty in a series of stunning vignettes, painting a vivid mural of what it was like to grow up African-American in Brooklyn during the 1970s…Woodson draws on all the senses to trace the milestones in a woman’s life and how her early experiences shaped her identity.” (Publishers Weekly, (Boxed and Starred Review))

“With spare yet poetic writing, this long-awaited adult novel by National Book Award winner Woodson (Brown Girl Dreaming) is a series of vignettes narrated by August, shortly after her dad’s funeral and a chance encounter with an old friend.” (Library Journal (starred review))

“Perhaps unsurprisingly, given Woodson’s background not only as a novelist but also as a poet, Another Brooklyn is told in spare, lyrical prose, with a surface simplicity that belies its underlying narrative strength and emotional heft. Often, in Woodson’s novel, what isn’t said is as essential as what is, and readers come away feeling as if they, in the process of reading the novel, are somehow partners in Woodson’s project of telling her poignant and devastating story about dreams deferred, destroyed, and—in rare cases—realized.” (BookBrowser Review)

From the Back Cover

For August, running into a long-ago friend sets in motion resonant memories and transports her to a time and a place she thought she had mislaid: 1970s Brooklyn, where friendship was everything.

August, Sylvia, Angela, and Gigi shared confidences as they ambled their neighborhood streets, a place where the girls believed that they were amazingly beautiful, brilliantly talented, with a future that belonged to them.

But beneath the hopeful promise there was another Brooklyn, a dangerous place where grown men reached for innocent girls in dark hallways, where mothers disappeared, where fathers found religion, and where madness was a mere sunset away.

Jacqueline Woodson’s Another Brooklyn heartbreakingly illuminates the formative period when a child meets adulthood—when precious innocence meets the all-too-real perils of growing up. In prose exquisite and lyrical, sensuous and tender, Woodson breathes life into memories, portraying an indelible friendship that united young lives.

Another Brooklyn is an enthralling work of literature from one of our most gifted novelists.

A lovely lyrical novella, a dreamy remembering of coming of age in Brooklyn in the 1970s
By Marie
Exquisite! Such a beautifully written piece of work, that it felt like poetry, both in the flow and the content. It has an ethereal dreamy quality and is full of rich metaphors.

I have been struggling with my review of this book, because whatever I seem to write doesn’t really do the book justice. It is such a unique beautiful piece of writing. The story begins with August, the narrator, returning by train to visit her dying father. She catches a glimpse of Sylvia, a childhood friend and memories come flooding back to her. The ethereal quality of the book has in part to do with the fact that the narrator is looking way back on an earlier part of her life; in part that she is remembering her childhood, one in which she could not comprehend or accept the death of her mother; and thirdly the poetic quality to the writing.

The idea that August thinks her mother will return and convinces her younger brother of the same, feels so honest, so real, so a part of how children really cope with the loss of a parent. Within the book, different cultural rites of death are mentioned reminding the reader that death is there, but not letting us know the actual circumstances of the mother’s death until later.

Once August arrives in Brooklyn with her father and brother, the father cages the children in the house worried about the dangers of the outside world. This backfires as her younger brother falls through the glass window injuring his arm in his attempts to watch the outside world. At this point, August and her brother are allowed outside to experience the world.

August reminisces about her female friendships from this era in her life. She had developed a close-knit group of girlfriends who become her “home, ” her family, and this allows her feel alive again, after feeling cooped up in their Brooklyn apartment. Together these girls feel stronger and braver. Their friendship gives them a sense of safety, of home, of togetherness that is lacking from their home environments. They grow into puberty together, date, experiment with sex. They confide in each other, things that they do not feel safe confiding to their own parents.

August’s mother’s words about not trusting female friendships keep echoing back to her. “Don’t trust women, my mother said to me. Even the ugly ones will take what you thought was yours.” August learns how this can be true as the friendships begin to slip and in some cases fracture. However, for a time, the friendships are a beautiful thing and allow the girls to feel powerful in a world where they are vulnerable, on account of being female, minorities and poor.

This reflection is of Brooklyn in the 1970’s in a neighborhood that is turning from white to black. While August finds comfort in her friendships, her father finds comfort in religion. It is a stunning look at this place and time period, the struggles these girls faced as they came of age and the hope and courage needed to face it. I highly recommend this to everyone.

My past revisited through J Woodson' s eyes
By Bernadette M Cronin-Geller
Because I was born and raised in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn from mid 30s to mid 50s when I left to find the growing me, it was fascinating to have this sacred place so owned by a gifted artist of a different race in a different era, and yet still have memories evoked. Our stories may be different but the human experience of love, friendships, betrayals all resonate.

Unusual story structure but beautifully written
By Pippa Lee
“Another Brooklyn” follows August as she remembers her tween and teen years in Brooklyn. Her father moved there from Tennessee when August was just eight years old. August and her younger brother used to people-watch from their apartment window. It’s from there that she spotted the three girls, Sylvia, Angela and Gigi, who would become her close friends for the next eight years.

August and her friends’ lives are far from perfect. Yet they try to hold on to their dreams just as reality rears its ugly face on every street corner. Out in the world, they confront drugs, sexual predators, poverty, racism, prejudice, and violence while at home; they must deal with parental absence, whether it is physical or emotional. This is a story of female friendship that evolves and changes, bringing both joy and pain as the four girls transition into adulthood. The amazing thing about this book is how Jacqueline Woodson can pack so much in “Another Brooklyn” yet it has less than 200 pages. She may be economical with words, but she doesn’t shortchange readers when it comes to delivering an emotional and thoughtful story of loss.

The Camera Does the Rest: How Polaroid Changed Photography, by Peter Buse

In a world where nearly everyone has a cellphone camera capable of zapping countless instant photos, it can be a challenge to remember just how special and transformative Polaroid photography was in its day. And yet, there’s still something magical for those of us who recall waiting for a Polaroid picture to develop. Writing in the context of two Polaroid Corporation bankruptcies, not to mention the obsolescence of its film, Peter Buse argues that Polaroid was, and is, distinguished by its process—by the fact that, as the New York Times put it in 1947, “the camera does the rest.”

Polaroid was often dismissed as a toy, but Buse takes it seriously, showing how it encouraged photographic play as well as new forms of artistic practice. Drawing on unprecedented access to the archives of the Polaroid Corporation, Buse reveals Polaroid as photography at its most intimate, where the photographer, photograph, and subject sit in close proximity in both time and space—making Polaroid not only the perfect party camera but also the tool for frankly salacious pictures taking.

Along the way, Buse tells the story of the Polaroid Corporation and its ultimately doomed hard-copy wager against the rising tide of digital imaging technology. He explores the continuities and the differences between Polaroid and digital, reflecting on what Polaroid can tell us about how we snap photos today. Richly illustrated, The Camera Does the Rest will delight historians, art critics, analog fanatics, photographers, and all those who miss the thrill of waiting to see what develops.

Review
"As Buse argues in his smart and engaging The Camera Does the Rest: How Polaroid Changed Photography, amateur picture taking was originally conceived of as 'a form of play'....Looking at a Polaroid is unlike looking at any other picture because a Polaroid has that which a photograph is supposed to lack: an aura. Each shot is singular, unrepeatable; each life, a story; each image, a measure of hungry, sucking time." (Harper's)

"The Camera Does the Rest is the best kind of cultural study, and refreshingly jargon-free. Buse steers a course between the mockers and admirers, and brings concision, shape and clarity to a complex subject through his skillful plundering of the enormous Polaroid archive in Harvard Business School's Baker Library. This well-illustrated, handsomely produced book is rich in facts, speculation, and anecdotes."

(Times Literary Supplement)

"Scholarly yet joyful.” (Wall Street Journal)

"Mining the Polaroid archives in the Baker Library Historical Collections, Harvard Business School, Buse researches how Polaroid cameras were marketed, the aesthetics of the Polaroid print, and the social rituals associated with owning and taking instant images. Other books detail the life of Polaroid’s founder Edwin H. Land and examine the company’s distinctive milieu; this scholarly cultural history is distinguished by Buse’s background in performance studies. The author is less interested in studying pictures than he is in thinking about the performative moment of taking and sharing instant photos, an aspect unique to Polaroid—until digital photography came into existence—an innovation that led to Polaroid’s demise but was also facilitated by instant film. For readers interested in photography history, the cultural history of technology, innovation, and business history." (Library Journal)

"Critic and theorist Buse’s fine examination of the cultural history of Polaroid technology, The Camera Does the Rest, considers the societal forces at work as the company succeeded and failed, from the launch of its first camera in 1948 to its existence today. Scholarly and philosophical, the book is an intriguing read, although not a casual one. Buse’s answers offer insights into our interactions with technologies over time, as well as new ways of understanding the evolution of contemporary shutterbugs." (American Scientist)

"?Polaroid is a technology whose sun has set. It casts long shadows nevertheless, and in this afterglow Buse pursues two lines of inquiry, both fascinating....One may debate the relative powers of the photograph when treated as a memento, or as a tangible object, or as a social act—and the history of the company reads like a prĂ©cis of popular image technology in the 20th century. But, as Buse demonstrates, in being so different from so many other kinds of photographs, the Polaroid helps to reveal what photography has been, and what it does." (The Nation)

"The Camera Does the Rest takes a deep dive into Polaroid’s corporate archives to reveal the company’s transformative influence on the photographic process. This book covers all of the cultural perceptions and scientific discoveries that made Polaroid something very special and leaves us with a clear sense of its lost pleasures, too. For Buse, Polaroid is not just an object of nostalgia, it is a catalyst undeniably linked to the massive changes we've seen in social rituals and imaging technology in our lifetime." (American Photo)

"The Camera Does the Rest is a well-researched and thorough history of Polaroid photography, covering both the technical aspects of the cameras and their film, and the influence of this technology on society. It’s generously illustrated but is by no means a coffee-table book. Instead, it’s a serious history and analysis of the Polaroid phenomenon, and each illustration is included to make some point.”
  (PopMatters)

"Buse poses a linked series of questions, and the answers and reflections about the industrial, social, cultural, and artistic responses to Polaroid tell its unique history from its rise to its fall. His intelligent, thoughtful, well-written essays provide the framework for an excellent overview of the subject." (Choice)

“The Camera Does the Rest is a fascinating study of a unique product and the serious and quirky uses it saw. It will interest camera buffs or those that enjoy an unusual story."
  (Galveston County Daily News)

"Buse gives us an account of the experience of the Polaroid camera and an extended analysis of its distinctive photos. Most striking is how he traces its presence in novels, advertisements, and films, proving its iconic status in our culture despite its recent demise. The Camera Does the Rest will be of interest to anyone involved in photography, from students to visual and cultural study scholars to members of camera clubs." (Geoffrey Batchen, author of Forget Me Not: Photography and Remembrance)

" In this engaging and wide-ranging account, Buse gets at what made Polaroid special: as a technological triumph, an array of popular products, a generator of social rituals, and harbinger of a digital era in which everyone is a maker and consumer of instant photographs. Buse’s approach obeys the guideline he cites from a 1981 Polaroid newsletter—'stay close to your subjects'—with exemplary results. His survey of the practices, materials, and legacy of Polaroid photography will serve as a model for cultural histories of imaging technologies." (Britt Salvesen, Los Angeles County Museum of Art)

“In The Camera Does the Rest, Buse brings his gift for in-depth reporting and insightful commentary to this convincing argument on the cultural and social impact of the Polaroid brand. Buse helps us answer the questions on the minds of many ever since 2008 when the company ceased production on instant cameras and film. What was Polaroid? Was it the magnum opus of a brilliant inventor? The results of decades of hard work by a team of experts? A mere toy? A party camera? A covert device for making home pornography? An invitation to artists to experiment? A sophisticated tool for professional photographers? A gateway to the world of digital imaging? A camera for the masses to produce trillions of snapshots? As Buse shows, the answer to each of these questions is a resounding YES.” (Mary-Kay Lombino, Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center)

“In a series of brilliantly executed snapshots, Buse carefully but quickly reveals (in much the same manner as the actual photographs he writes about) a remarkable new history of Polaroid photography. Accessible, engaging, and often eloquent, Buse offers new insights and challenges conventional notions from ‘what makes a Polaroid a Polaroid’ to the cause of the company’s demise. It is a book that will make you see anew the story of a beloved American company and its influence on modern culture.” (Deborah G. Douglas, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Museum)
