A must for Fallout fans

The book itself is pretty big and you have played Fallout games before you get the idea how big and complicated the game can get.
This great quality book is full of useful guides of perks, stategies, enemies - whatever you need!
The mini posters are a cool collector's item, the quality is very good and look nice as they are made out of cardboard.
If you are like me and get easily lost while exploring dungeons, this books has a free code to download interactive maps to your tablet or smartphone which is very useful.
As a fan, this is a must.

Aesthetics Galore, But Lack Of Description

Well... its okay. I'm just going to start by saying its not what I expected. The Book itself is neat, professional, and clean. Very nice pages, and have a crisp look. The lithographs are neat, and crisp looking as well. The map that is included is FANTASTIC. I really do enjoy it and spent about 30 minutes starring it down after the un-boxing.

Getting to the content of the book, well ... its ... not the best. Comparing it to the great FO3 game guide or the TES5 guide, it just cant hold itself up to those. The book's info doesn't go deep enough into it's categories, what I mean by that is that it doesn't go over things clearly enough. Say if you are looking over a mission and want to know what kind of conflicts you'll come across (combat, dialogue, etc.) it doesn't say. Or if the mission had a hidden chest or safe that is obscured or hidden, the guide says nothing about these certain items/containers. So you could completely barge over a great gun, or good armor piece, or something like that. The reading is very light and is not very descriptive as well. The pages that are designated for missions and quests just tell you how to do the quest, rather that giving tips for combat, or how to avoid it all-together, as I stated before. A great example of a guide that does this is the fantastic GTA-5 guide, that went over mission branching, avoiding obstacles, certain short-cuts, weapon/collectible locations, etc. This guide simply doesn't, which is pretty frustrating, if you expected something like that (as I did). The book does (as i felt) deal with weapons, bios, and locations pretty well though. The book does have a pretty good array of tables, pictures, and columns, which helps add detail, and makes it a bit more immersive.

So no, Ladies & Gentlemen, this guide is not the best Prima has done, but in makes up for its lack of description, and mission content in pleasing aesthetics, crisp looks, and good presentation.

Dovahkin isin't gonna Fus Ro Dah over this,and the lone wanderer isint going to loose a limb over it. but there's still enough here to make a pleasing game guide.

It's More Like a Bloated Instruction Manual

Generally speaking, over the past few years Prima guides haven't really been bad. In fact with how useful their Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition guide was and how incredibly handy it was to have their HUGE Skyrim Legendary Edition guide, I was expecting a bit more from Prima than this. This guide is big. You'd assume a really big guide would be jam packed with information, but it isn't. Not only does Prima's Fallout 4 guide require a LOT of navigation to get all the information you need out of it, but the information itself isn't in depth in any way.

To begin, the guide looks pretty good. The cover (at least of the collector's edition) is very nice and the pages are perfectly glossy (even if a little thin). But the layout and design are usually pretty simple to follow. It doesn't quite thematically breathe Fallout the way the Fallout 3 guide did, but upon first flipping through it you'd be forgiven for thinking that it was a really in-depth guide. After all, it's thick, every page is filled with screenshots, tables and what looks to be information. But... what does that information say? How does it guide the player? This is where the guide becomes problematic.

The guide jumps right in, attempting to help you understand the game. It'll tell you about the basic things that the game itself will tell you. For those hoping to get more information on the various systems and how they work the guide doesn't go far. It doesn't necessarily have to, but it also doesn't spend a lot of time here. Once we get to the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. perks, though the guide begins to show the flaw that's going to keep players from truly mastering Fallout 4. Everything concerning your attributes and perks are things the game itself already tells you. There are no suggestions as to how to utilize or suggestions for players who wish to play a specific way. So much of what's here is ripped directly from the game itself. There's no real strategy or suggestions of how to utilize the perks to your advantage.

Going beyond that the guide mostly talks about other basics. It'll tell you things such as how combat works (a very basic rundown) before going on to detail the enemies you'll run into. There are only a couple of paragraphs. No strategies on how to fight these enemies, or suggestions but I suppose that I can deal with. We then go into things like your inventory where there are lots of tables. I don't have too many qualms here except for one: Your weapons. The guide only tells you the most basic of basic things about the weapons. Every now and then there are some tips, but the guide spends far more time telling you ABOUT the weapons rather than giving tips on how to USE the weapons or how best to customize the weapons. The guide talks briefly about mods... but once again it spends a lot of time telling you ABOUT them and not how to utilize them.

Even if you manage to get through all that, the walkthrough itself is going to be terribly problematic. Before the walkthrough there is a list of all the quest, but I found this to be quite useless in comparison. For instance, it's great that it tells me the quest type, but... I'd like to know where it is. It tells you what page to find the quest on but say you want to do a quest in a specific location... it won't tell you. It just won't tell you where it is in the game.

I understand that Fallout 4 doesn't exactly present a great main story. The joy of Fallout 4 is roaming the wasteland and finding and discovering the individual quests, not necessarily your own. The world is pretty cool. Apparently Prima thought similarly. The guide only takes twenty pages or so to cover the main quest. This is because each quest is only given a handful of paragraphs dedicated to it. Sometimes those paragraphs are used to tell you absolutely nothing. Near the beginning of the game when going through Sanctuary, for instance, the guide tells me to explore, but at no point helps point me in the direction of potentially useful items or prepares me for some the hazards I might face. At times the guide MIGHT mention enemies you might encounter and at other times it doesn't say anything. The hazards is a far worse, though. Certainly it's important to explore without really knowing what's coming. But if I'm going to spend a good deal of money on a strategy guide (whether for a collector's item or not) then it's not unfair to expect the guide to give me as much detail as it possibly can. At no point has this guide made me feel secure in what it is I'm doing. There's usually an enemy it doesn't mention. A hazard it doesn't talk about. It rarely points items out in the walkthrough.

There are more quests the guide covers beyond the main stuff, but it's mostly the same. A lot of paragraphs that usually describe the quest but don't guide you through it, while explaining to you what the game is already telling you. There are hardly any real details on what to do. Usually it's something basic like... "Explore this area." Each quest usually has a list of objectives and places to explore listed as well. This is great, but going beyond this the guide doesn't feel it needs to tell you HOW to obtain those objectives or what's worth exploring. The guide will usually point you to somewhere in the middle to look for a map. We'll come back to this as well. The point is that the walkthrough and quest guide don't feel complete. They are peppered with good looking screenshots, but again, it's that you don't get enough details about these quests. And sometimes inbetween main quest missions it doesn't tell you what to do inbetween. Things you need to be doing inbetween quests the guide isn't always telling you about. Going from one main quest to another, for example, might actually require you to go through other areas. But since it's not a "quest" the guide just simply opts not to mention anything about it. It's SOMEWHERE in the walkthrough, but because it's not a "main" quest it's not going to be found in that section. It might show up in one of the other quest sections, but you're going to have to basically flip through the guide to find it.

The walkthrough also has lots of helpful tips from Vault Boy... but often it's just repeating a lot of things the game itself is actually telling you. They're not so much helpful as they are redundant. And the entire walkthrough is sometimes written in this manner. The game will tell you something and you'll often read the walkthrough to find it describing what an NPC just told you and not necessarily how to go about it. There's so much fluff in the guide at times that it was usually better to go online to figure out what I was looking for. To spend this much money on a guide to ultimately need to go online for information is pretty bad. In this day and age, a strategy guide is a supplement and not a necessity. Often they are collector's items. That isn't a good reason for a poorly constructed walkthrough, however. The Fallout 4 guide either holds back on a lot of detail or it just simply gives you the most basic of basic information. It's the difference between someone backseat gaming and someone playing the game with you.

After the walkthrough and quest guide we come to the workshop chapter. As with the rest of the guide it tells you a lot ABOUT the workshops but isn't going to help you utilize them. At times the Fallout 4 guide feels less like a strategy guide and more like a bloated instruction manual. After the workshops we then come to the maps. The maps section is the biggest section of the guide by far. Taking up HALF the guide itself. Sure enough most of these maps are good. It shows you a huge map before going region by region. In each region it'll then go through all the primary locations where it actually shows you the area itself. The guide is less interested in showing you all the wilderness in between these primary locations. Each section in the walkthrough usually will send you to the map if you want a good idea of what the location looks like. While some of those items are shown in the walkthrough, they're definitely shown on the maps. You get an optimal route to get through an area and then they point out a few items. There are even small snippets of information here that even tell you some things you might want to do in these areas. I'm not sure why those things weren't included in the walkthrough. Sometimes it's even more precise in fewer words. At times it made more sense to just flip to this section of the guide than it was to use the actual walkthrough.

At first it seemed odd that the maps weren't in the walkthrough itself, but after utilzing the guide for a bit, I'm glad they weren't. The walkthrough would be far more hazardous to use. It made using the walkthrough a lot easier. The maps section also shows all the secondary locations. There aren't maps for these, but they're usually places on the over world map with a small bit to tell you about it. It's actually not a bad section. The only major nitpick here is that the legend only appears on the first page or so of the section. There are a lot of symbols to memorize. You might have to flip back to it from time to time.

The biggest problem with the guide isn't necessarily it's lackluster walkthrough. The bigger problem is definitely navigating the guide itself. Useful techniques, that even Prima used in the past, aren't used here. Most guides have a decent "tab" system. This is where you can get an idea where you should flip by looking at the tabs usually in the margin of the page. Each section has a tab at a different spot. A tab system helps players get an idea of what section starts where and how large it is. When flipping through you'll know if you've gone too far because the tabs have changed. I'm not sure why Prima didn't use a good tab system. Especially when they've used one in previous guides. Worse than a tab system, however, is the lack of an index. This guide is huge. Being able to pinpoint a quest (in more than just a list) would've been nice. There were times when I wanted to know WHERE a quest was and I had to flip through the guide endlessly to find it. An index would've easily solved these issues. Not just that, but for those who purchased the collector's edition guide... ribbon bookmarks would've been a nice addition. It would've helped with the page flipping.

Strategy guides are not really a necessity anymore. Guides are often supplements or collector's items now. Sometimes strategy guides can enhance the experience of the game. Prima's Fallout 4 guide doesn't really do anything. It doesn't supplement the game or enhance the experience. The extras included with the collector's edition guide are hardly enough to make up for how much information the guide just doesn't have. Prima's Fallout 3 guide felt complete. It was huge, but justifiably huge. Here the guide feels incomplete. Were it not for the maps it'd likely just be an overblown instruction manual. A walkthrough needs to do more than tell me what the game is telling me. It needs to actually guide. It needs to actually dive. For collector's the guide will certainly looks nice on a shelf. It's pretty and has some decent maps. But the problems with the walkthrough and the absurd amount of page flipping you'll need to do to find all the information you want don't make the guide a good companion.

intriguing concept

This is a very interesting novel that pretends to be an autobiographical depiction of the Spanish dictator. It isn't, of course. However, it makes for interesting reading for anyone who would like to learn more about the history of the Spanish Civil War and the leader of the victorious forces. It is not a flattering depiction of General Franco, but I like it.

A Landmark Book on Addiction

As the father of a recovering heroin addict, I will tell anyone who asks me that David Sheff's Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction is probably the best book I've ever read. As a matter of fact, Beautiful Boy helped me come to grips with my own son's addiction and prompted me to work on my own recovery. As a result, I was able to get my own life back. Even better, as I write this review my 23-year-old son is eight months clean and sober--the longest stretch of clean time he's had since he was 16.

That being said, it should come as no surprise that Clean: Overcoming Addiction and Ending America's Greatest Tragedy is probably the most anticipated book ever for me. I pre-ordered it from Amazon as soon as I heard about it and have been eagerly awaiting its publication. Luckily, I was able to get an advance copy through Amazon's Vine program.

David Sheff's latest offering is to be commended for many reasons. First and foremost, though, is its explanation of how addiction works and its attempt to break the stigma frequently associated with this ancient disease. "Most drug use isn't about drugs; it's about life," Sheff writes in the Preface. "Our prevention and treatment efforts have failed mostly because they've focused on dealing with the drugs themselves, but drug abuse is almost always the result of kids starting to use early, genetics, and other problems--stress, trauma, mental illness, or some combination of these factors. The new paradigm is rooted in recognizing that drugs are a symptom, not a cause, and whatever problems underlie them must be (and can be) addressed. Until they are, our prevention and treatment systems will continue to fail most people."

Sheff outlines the six precepts that underpin Clean in the Preface. They are:

1. Most drug use isn't about drugs; it's about life.
2. Addiction is a disease.
3. This disease is preventable.
4. This disease is treatable.
5. As with any other illness, the prevention strategies and treatments most likely to work aren't based on tradition, wishful thinking, or faith, but science.
6. Drug abusers and addicts can do more than get off drugs; they can achieve mental health.

Those precepts are the road map for the book, and Sheff does a fabulous job of backing them all up using scientific evidence, case studies, and his own expertise and experience.

Regarding the stigma associated with addiction, Sheff states: "This stigma associated with drug use--the belief that bad kids use, good kids don't, and those with full-blown addiction are weak, dissolute, and pathetic--has contributed to the escalation of use and has hampered treatment more than any single other factor." As the father of a recovering addict, I know all too well how that stigma affects addicts--and families of addicts--in a negative way. Kudos to Sheff for attacking it head-on.

Another misconception Sheff takes on has to do with relapse: "The main problems with America's addiction-treatment system stem from its roots in the archaic notion that addiction is a choice, not a disease. One common symptom of the disease of addiction is relapse. Kicking an addict out of treatment for relapsing is like kicking a cancer patient out of treatment when a tumor metastasizes." Again, Sheff is telling it like it is and striving to destroy the old myths associated with addiction.

Every page of this book has interesting and valuable information on it. Some paragraphs are so full of information that I found myself re-reading them so I could absorb everything Sheff had to say. I will probably re-read the entire book several times. It's that good and that informative.

This is not only a book about addiction; it's a book about hope. It lets people know that addiction can be prevented. And even if one does succumb to addiction, that there are ways to treat the disease and for people to get clean and stay clean. Sheff ends the main part of the book with his own take on the twelve steps, entitled "The Clean Paradigm in Twelve Steps." (Example: "12. End the war on drugs and treat addiction for what it is--not a criminal problem, but a health crisis.") He also provides a very informative Appendix--"Just Say Know"--where he describes "the most prevalent drugs and their effects, starting with the most ubiquitous drug of all." (That would be alcohol.)

If you have been affected by addiction, you must read this book. If you have kids entering their formative years, you must read this book. If there is a history of addiction in your family, you must read this book. Even if you don't fit any of those categories, I'd still recommend you read Clean to get a remarkable insight into one of the biggest issues facing our country today.

What I appreciate most about this book is that it is the first I have read that does not claim to hold the only way to sobriety, or the only truth about addiction. I appreciate the nod to parents who lose their minds when a child is dying, that we not compound the indignity by taking fire at the parents as "co dependents".

But we have a long way to go. I wish I could put this book in the hands of our local judges, probation officers, jailers and police, and insist that they read it. They continue to mete out punative sentences, or insist upon ineffective treatment, too much or too little, that can especially ruin young lives.

Two of my children have suffered severe addiction lasting over 15 years. I have seen them through Hazeldon (four times), Caron Foundation, Michael's House, Bishop Gooden (3 times)and at least five other top-name facilities... in and out of ICU, chasing paramedics to hospitals after overdoses, into long term in-patient and out-patient treatment facilities for years. I hate to say this... by far the best rehab has been jail. That's not to say anything positive about jail except that it did essentially the same thing as all the rehabs... it bought them time away from the environment and allowed them time to detox (horribly, without any medical attention... but, it is what it is.) In terms of effectiveness, though, they always relapsed again eventually. It is clear to me that there is no punishment strong enough to "cure" addiction.

One of my kid's came through it--the one everyone thought wouldn't live another day and he has been five years sober. It just happened when it was ready to happen. My other son is still struggling addiction with everything he's got, but holds a great job, smiles, is kind, loving and always thoughtful. He has chosen Methadone treatment, and because of that, there is no hospital, rehab or other treatment facility that will accept him. If he wants to finally get totally clean, he will have to do it by himself... cold turkey. My thought at this point is that we are buying him time, and praying for the miracle. Harm reduction is the thing I humbly appreciate. I never thought I would wind up praising the run down, miserable looking Needle Exchange (I used to find these clean needles in his room and toss them out, until the day he explained that all that would do is cause him to take worse chances with his using)... because of these folks, my son doesn't have HIV on top of heroin addiction. I have learned to be grateful where I never thought I would.

David Sheff has been through all of this, and is still fighting the good fight. His son, Nic, must be one fine son--and I have read both of his great books. "Clean" can't make big proclamations about what treatment to seek or where because at this time the science is still too new, the statistics aren't all in. I am SO GRATEFUL he acknowledges that white-knuckling it through AA is not the way for everyone. My son has gone to hundreds of AA meetings, and I honor that he hung in there, continuing to try when it was so obviously NOT a fit. Maybe the thing David contributes the most in this book is humility... and trust in the goodness of those who are struggling with addiction.

I never saw my sons having any fun with this. I have held my younger son's head while he threw up, went through withdrawals, dozens of times. I've watched him sit suicidally alone in his room, while trying to detox before going to jail. I haven't seen the partying everyone imagines. And by far the worst (for me) is the abandonment I have felt, for them and for myself, when things go so terribly wrong.

Thank you, David, for your great book. And I expect that you will write another ( or Nic will!) as newer and more potent resources become known.

Such an important book

David Sheff not only pulls the curtain back, he blows it off the rod so we all can get a real look at addiction and what is NOT working. He demonstrates how we are 40 years behind on addiction therapy. If you have children, YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK. Addiction can happen anywhere to anyone and it does.

Mr. Sheff was the author of Beautiful Boy - his son's own journey into and through the landscape of drug addiction.

One of the most important take-aways I got from this book was the fact that 9 our of 10 addicts started before 18. Can you even believe that? So, if you could somehow devise a way to keep your kids from trying before they turn 18, 90% of your battle would be won. Anyway - I thought that was some real food for thought.

Another take-away - this one too heartbreaking - just when an addict falls down and off his program - that is when the system fails him and throws him out of the program, the halfway house. JUST when this support and help is needed so much.

A big chapter is devoted to AA. Totally non-judgmental. Just the facts, descriptions. Interesting.

A thorough review of therapies, which ones have the best results and why. Following a daily schedule, chock full of habits - can really help. This seems so simple and yet is so profound.

And Dear G*D - - - the COST of some of these programs - and insurance doesn't help - HOW CAN regular people help their family get this kind of help?!? WHY can't we have more effective treatment programs at better costs, why isn't insurance helping with this?? Lots of food for thought there.

Okay - what I thought could be done a little better:

1. A one page - WHAT DO I DO NOW - for the parent/loved one/etc. when my son/daughter/person - is in trouble - I don't have time or attention to read the 350 pages - I need a one page cheat sheet.

2. A simple glossary in the back of the book. CBT - means what again? You could use a glossary in the back to look it up - OH YEAH - Cog. Behavior Therapy...

Those were my two little shortcomings comments.

Great book - so much to think about - to discuss - long overdue.

I own about 7 different drumming books and this one is by far the best I've ever owned. The author presents a system for training the muscles that is second to none. Drumming technique is all about muscle memory and comprehensive muscle memory training is all about teaching your brain patterns and mastering them one at a time.

This book is immediately accessible for beginners. The exercises are deceptively simple and progress in a perfectly hierarchical manner. Each new exercise builds and expands upon the previous exercise which just enough of a twist to cause your brain to note and learn the distinction. This makes practice easy and progress quick.

I don't know whether it's good or bad, but you can spend months (as I have) working on just the first page! Not because the exercises are tough, but because even the simplest of exercises takes time and devotion to master.

I can think of no more important skills for a drummer to develop than timing accuracy and independence of limbs. If you purchase only one drumming book, and Stick Control is it, you'll still have an extraordinary tool at your disposal.

Where Greatness Begins

Don't let the Minuteman drummer on the cover throw you. This isn't just about marching band. This is exactly how you learn the snare. This perfect little book contains just what you need and nothing you don't. There are no cute "comic book" style panels and no anthropomorphic eighth notes dressed as hip-hoppers, trying to make drumming "cool" to a bunch of iPhone-addled 21st century kids. Frankly, if your kids need that stuff to keep their attention, they either aren't mentally ready to learn music or just aren't interested. This is strictly a book of exercises that, if you take it seriously, will teach you more than a thousand amateur youtube videos could. Is it exciting? Not really. Can it get boring? Sure. The list of things that never get boring is awfully small. Is it repetitive? Absolutely, but that's a good thing. The drum set, maybe more than any other instrument, is about about muscle memory and control. The great ones still practice the fundamentals. This book, an inexpensive metronome and an occasional lesson with someone who can help clean up your technique will get you on the road to drumming excellence. Master this book and you'll have the foundation to go anywhere you want as a drummer.

Great book for learning rudimental drumming

I used Stick Control when I was a kid learning rudimental snare drum to march drum corps. My instructor used this book and his instructor used this book as well. It is like an etude book for drummers and has the rudiment patterns in different forms to which in the long run if practiced diligently; slow and with pace, will condition the hands to remember rudiment patterns to the point in which one can play the patterns without thought; in the same way that the Arban etude book works for brass instruments and if such exercises are practiced in the same way. This book works as a good supplement to drum lessons, other books, or other things that a person is learning. I recommend this book be used with a teacher for further guidance (otherwise, some things may seem tedious). This is in all an old book, but still a good book and many drummers that I came in contact with from drum corps to professional drum set playing all used the etudes out of this book at some time or another and attest that this book helped with their drumming. Anyone the slightest bit different is eyed with suspicion, as Claire found out when she missed a year of junior high due to leukemia. Now she works hard at fitting in, following treacherous but popular Macy's lead, hiding her passion for the guitar, and never talking about her fear that her illness will return. Or her nightmares. Or her eating disorder. The boys of Hackett Island's "in" crowd are members of the "fish frat"--hunky sons of the local fishermen--and their horseplay even among themselves is brutal and edge-of-danger.

And then Lani Garver shows up at school, a tall, thin, strangely androgynous person. "No. Not a girl. Sorry," he says pleasantly when Macy questions him about his gender with vicious curiosity. Claire McKenzie, narrator of this taut, provocative novel, wonders not only "what happened to Lani Garver" but about who and what Lani is. When Lani shows up on Hackett Island, neither Claire nor her cheerleader friends can tell if Lani is male or female (Asked if he's a girl, he says, "Oh! No. Not a girl. Sorry"). Claire has been hiding much of her identity, too: she conceals her electric guitar and the bloody lyrics she writes, and she doesn't tell her friends or her alcoholic mother that she suspects her leukemia has returned. When Lani finds her fainting, he pries her secrets out of her, then takes her to a hospital where she can get tested without parental consent. They bond, a bit quickly, as he helps her face her "hidden garbage," (among other things, her recent ill health is due to an eating disorder). When an orderly tells her about androgynous "floating angels," spiritual beings that help people in need, the discussion plants a question in Claire's mind, and as odd events continue, she skates close to asking if Lani might be one of those angels. Plum-Ucci's talent is such that readers will share rather than dismiss Claire's curiosity. The climactic scene, in which the boys kidnap Lani and Claire and take them to the docks, crackles with suspense. Even if not always convincing, the plotting exerts a sure grip, commanding the imagination well past the final page. Ages 14-up.

Grade 9 Up-Claire McKenzie, 16, is a cheerleader, musician, and leukemia survivor. She's haunted by dreams, day and night, that her cancer is back. She secretly writes music with lyrics inspired by dark visions of girls who cut themselves with razors and watch themselves bleed. Her friend Macy is controlling, but she helps Claire feel "normal." Lani Garver enters the picture as a new student at their high school. With his porcelain skin, high cheekbones, longish bob, and seductive walk, it is hard to be sure if he's a guy or a girl. Claire's friends decide that he is gay. He is intelligent and worldly wise and is the one person to whom Claire can talk about her darkest dreams and fears. He seems incapable of not speaking the truth even when his life depends on it. Plum-Ucci also introduces magical elements into the story through Lani's philosophical reflections on Andovenes' Angels, and Claire's growing speculation that her new friend may indeed be a floating angel. She discovers who she is, in the face of unbelievably strong peer pressure, and the determination to decide what is real and what is not. Prejudice, homophobia, friendship, tolerance, individuality, and the possibility that something spiritually bigger than all of us rules this universe are wonderfully woven into this powerfully told story. Outstanding writing, strong characterization, and riveting plot development make this title rise above many recent coming-of-age stories.

love the concept but very triggering for trans / lgbt readers i think

honestly i really wanted to like this book it had been recommended to me by a friend but just wanna say this book might be traumatizing to trans folks interested in reading it, i had to put it down and couldn't finish it, the narrator is cis and the character lani isn't necessarily trans but def gender non conforming and often described in really horrible ways by the cis characters even narrator who is supposed to be a friend, unless you're interested in another traumatizing story about a kid who feels like it could be you being murdered by a bunch of cis devils stay away, also the writing is fairly racist at multiple times specifically towards native folks that were just extra traumatizing.

A great story about a cancer survivor and a horrible story about a gender variant individual

What happened to Lani Garver is a really good book about a cancer survivor and a really bad book about a gender variant individual. I will give this book the highest praise I possible can, I didn't write yesterday because I was so wrapped up in finishing this book.

First the good part. The main character, Claire missed a year and half of junior high because she was battling Leukemia. She's in remission and back on Hackett Island for high school. She hopes to put the past behind her and just be a normal kids. There's two small problems with this idea. First off she's got a huge pile of emotional issues she hasn't dealt with. Secondly the kids she is trying to fit in with are way to innocent and naive, and not in a good way.

The crowd that Claire is running with aren't a cute cuddly sort of innocent. They are dangerously reckless and selfish sort of innocent. Her cheerleading friends are mean and selfish and attention seeking. They all want to get with the boys of the "fish frat". The fish frat are sons of the local fishermen. During the tourist seasons they work as lifeguards. They are all big hunky brutes who drink too much and play dangerous macho games of chicken.

There is a legend on Hackett sound that if an Indian Summer falls in November it will mean a curse. Claire doesn't believe that but this particular Indian Summer she is getting dizzy and fears the cancer is back.

Into this walks Lani Garver. Lani Garver is so ambiguous that at first no one at school is even sure if he's a boy or a girl. Lani won't help them out much either. He claims to hate boxes, including boxes like boy/girl gay/straight.

Claire starts out trying to be nice to Lani. The tables are quickly turned and it is Lani who must be nice, and help Claire. He helps her sneak away to Philidephia to be tested at a free clinic for cancer, so her parent's don't find out. The more she learns about this mysterious run away, the more questions it raises. A strange conversation with a medic at the clinic about how angels have no gender leaves her wondering if Lani is even human.

To the rest of Hackett Island, and to her old friends in fish frat, the question of Lani is easily answered. He is an effeminate gay boy. As a closet homophobe ramps up the gay bashing, Claire watches in horror as her 'friends' choose the convenient answer (that he brings it on himself) over the truth.

It's a wonderfully written book that really sucks you in. It is powerful and moving. For Claire it is a story of hope and healing, for Lani it is a brutal reminder of just how hard it can be to be different in our society. Overall I would say it's a great book and should be read in every high school. Maybe the world would become a better place.

original spin on old tale

This book uses issues like gay bashing, eating disorders and peer pressure to explore what is essentially a tale of sin and redemption. The teens in this book speak like they do in Hollywood movies, all self-consciously "hip" and snide. It seems like the author tries to shanghai an example of "teenspeak" such as "wild and happy parade of the teeth going" or "rule the cule" onto every page, and this makes it an awkward read. Most of the time, today's teens speak like everyone else, at least the ones I know, though of course they have their own catch-phrases.
The characters also seem strangely young at times. I doubt kids who are partying hard every week night insult people by remarking on their imaginary "boogers." That insult belongs in elementary school, at least when I was young. Adolescent girls are a little more sophisticated in their barbs by high school.
This was an original take on bullying, though, with several characters who were strikingly well-developed and did not fit into any "box" to quote one. I wish, however, the author hadn't tried to tie everything up in the final chapter. It reminded me of those movies where we get explanations of what happened to every character at the end, even the minor ones we could care less about (Like "Loser") I think a little come-uppance is great, but when cosmic justice is too neat (like this book) it erodes some of the believability that the author has worked so hard to create...
